FD Temperature

I was wondering what most people would consider a high Temp on their FD. Mine generally runs between 100 - 110 celsius when its warm out. Recently its been hitting 115 and then the fans come on and it drops. How safe is that? I have an ast deletion and just had a rebuild a while back. lots of mods. There was a coolant leak from a hose a while back and im wondering if the mixture is right. It seems like theres more water than coolant.

Ouch. Mine never hits 90 since I went pfc and fluidyne and got rid of my ast.

Lots of mods? What do you have?

greddy power extreme cat back
down pipe
act street strip clutch
silicone hoses
ast deletion
and greddy gauges
the pills are out of the turbo's because i still need to get
the power fc.

Your fans should be turning on around 108 C with a stock ecu/thermosensor. It sounds like your temp gauge is reading a bit hot or your fans just aren't turning on early enough. If you have a 93 or some 94s, you can turn on your parking lights to force the fans to come on early. Also, turning on the A/C will kick the fans on (not recommended if the fans are already running though....).

You should be running more water than coolant btw. Unless it get below freezing in the winters where you live, you should be running no more than 25/75 coolant to water.

Other than that, your temps are normal. You can install the fan switch mod, Miata thermosensor, or the PFC w/datalogit to make your fans come on earlier.

My Temp gauge (greddy) wont ever warm up from 0 - 80, instead it only flips on from 80 degrees C. when the car gets to that temp. When i turn off the car it will sometimes drop to zero and then flip back to the current temp reading. Problem is, my dash temp gauge runs a little over half when the temp hits 115, it drops but i don't like the fact that it does that to begin with.

thanks for the info

I like to stay around 88C. My fans turn on by themselves at 94C. 115C sounds kinda high.

holy crap! normally fd's should run about 200F (93.3c) although most seem to be running at 180f (82c) with mods to keep the temp down. 239f (115c) is way too hot to run (well for me at least). I suggest doing the fan mod where you can turn on fans much earlier. how long have you had your fd btw?

I have the stock cooling system with a pettit ast and an additional oil cooler from a R1 and I run the fan mod on high all the time. Highest temp I've ever seen was 90C under hard long boosting. 99% of the time I run at 83 C no matter what the conditions.

This is exactly what my greddy gauge does. It is because it is tapped behind the thermostat and you have to get to 83C before you start circulating across it. Good thing about it being this way is it is easy to tell if you are having a thermostat problem. It goes up to 115 when off because of heatsoak. That is normal also as far as I have seen.

Projectrx7 - I have done alot of the same mods as you.

Fluidyne
Greddy Front Mount
AST deletion

I think the pfc or fan mod would help you alot. The thing I have done that alot havent is I have removed my A/C condenser. I didnt like it being there and have a custom condenser design and placement in mind for the future - looks like next spring though so I will be sweating this summer.

I keep mine around 83c by turning the A/C on 2.
cooling mods are Koyo/NPG+ with PowerFC

If your gauge is mechanical, you have a contact problem with the wire that transfers the heat to the gauge. Maybe somewhere it is cut. Most of the times behind the gauge.
On the highway with 120-140km(70-80mph) my friend dimitris in his FD sees 82 degrees on his HKS gauge. When he is accelerating from the above speed to 160-180kph(100-115mph) the temp rises to 90 degrees.
When he accelerates from 180 to 250kph(115 to 160mph) for about 3 minutes, the temp stays at 90 degrees. The fans switch on at 95 degrees. All the above are measured with 25 degrees outside temp.
With only 50-50 water-ethanol, larger radiator, no air-pump, no A/C, relocated battery, fan-mod.
My advice is to check the gauge, check the cooling system and the thermostat and last but not least check the air-fuel ratio.
