FD speakers, which sizes has everyone used?
I've already searched on this subject and there's very little info in any of the threads that is useful.
From what I can tell, the front speakers are 6.3" stock, which means a 6.5" would fit there. I think I'm going to go with the 6.5", but has anyone tried anything else?
For the rears, with the wierd location, the stock size is 5"x7", and some say that 6"x8" will fit. Has anyone put 6x9's in? What about using round speakers in the rear?
For now I'm going to attempt to go with some Boston drivers front and rear, but Pioneer is driving a hard bargain with some of their speakers. I'm not interested in MB Quarts (too harsh)...does anyone have experience with any of the higher end Pioneer speakers?
...this thread covers a lot, but I'm just trying to get some of the info all in one place.
For any interested, I plan to run an Eclipse head unit (it's at a friend's place right now), boston or pioneer speakers front and rear, an 8" bazooka sub (unpowered), and an Eclipse 36401 4-channel amp, as well as a mono amp for the sub. Any suggestions on this stuff is welcom.
Sorry for not putting this in the interior/audio section, but that part of the forum gets very little traffic and I wanted exposure.

well i just purchased my 94
and wont get to the system for a couple of months
first does everybody think bostons are the only speaker out there
when installing speakers it all depends on your own personal taste. since you said mb's are to harsh then you would probably be better off with a soft dome tweeter.
second it depends on your budget for your system. if you go with step up speakers you will need to amp them or you just wasted your money on the speakers.
i would recommend component in front and matching coaxial ( same series ) in rear. mounting front tweeter up high and facing opposite seat. since you said you wanted a bazooka then use a five channel amp. personally don't approve of tubes because of price.
as always remember you get what you pay for.
there are ifinite possibilities for a system find a specialist in your area you can trust. hopefully there is one, or two, or three

Here's the deal:
I've listened to just about every speaker out there, and Boston's tend to sound right to my ear (considering the types of music I listen to). The Pioneers are great speakers, but I've not actually heard the ones that I'm looking at...
I'm not terribly concerned with money on this...the top end speakers (not including the insano expensive stuff) aren't too much money, so even if I did go with top end Bostons or something I wouldn't be breaking the bank too much.
As for the 5 channel amp...those are wack. I'd just as soon get a 6 channel and bridge two of them for the sub if I was going to get a big amp, but I already have the Eclipse amp in my possession, so I'm not going to spend $600 on a 6 channel amp when I could spend $200 on a really good mono amp to drive the sub.
As for the bazooka...it's mainly convenience. The bazooka will be easy to install/remove, makes pretty decent bass, and doesn't require any custom fab. I'm not going to be doing any bass competitions, and the cabin of the FD is so small already that there's no reason I'd need anything more than an 8" bazooka or at MOST a single 10" in a bandpass box. Problem with boxes and such is that they don't fit quite right.
I've got several colleagues that are very car stereo literate, so I plan to enlist their help in all of this.

As for the quote on MB's, that's like driving a Lambourgini Diablo VT and saying that is a harsh ride...lol
On that note...MB Quarts website shows the sizes for FD speakers...
When it boils down to speakers, you can practically fit any mother ones in your doors if you've got the knowledge in doing so....
Good luck and keep us updated on your enlistment of advice and choices...
We are all very pysched to hear from you soon....
P/S THE INTERIOR/EXTERIOR FORUMS ARE VISITED BY AUDIO GURUS ALL THE TIME....Patience is advised...lol

Uhm, I don't know about where I'm going to mount the amps yet. I'm not going to have them visible from the outside, so the most likely place as of right now is on a board mounted on the backside of the cabin divider (the removable plastic deal). I will need to check on the space available there, as well as what kind of routing I'll be able to do for power and such.
I'll be buying all of the speakers and stuff in about a month or two (getting married in September, so I need to make sure that's all covered before I spend anything on car stuff or the boss will wring my neck), so hopefully I'll be able to come up with something quickly.

With the front speakers, you need to buy a shallow 6.5 inch driver or get 5.25 inch speakers and construct a baffle.
The rear's are not 5x7, they are 6x8. 5x7 will not fit properly without constructing a baffle. It is important to make sure there are no gaps between the speaker and the panel you're mounting it to. Pioneer does make a 6x8 in 2-way and 3-way. I think they also make a shallower 6.5 inch.
I'm in the same boat as you and looking to upgrade speakers later this year probably. So far, the Pioneer's look the best as I really don't want to deal with constructing baffles and such to make other speakers fit. I'm sure they will sound decent, that's all I'm looking for in a car system. I save the really good sound for my home system anyway.
Good luck and let us know what you go with and how they work out.
EDIT: BTW, I understand about the "boss". I've been married 3-1/2 years. I'm lucky to have a wife who only goes mildly insane when I mention potential car or audio purchases.....

No, hears the deal!
I just installed Boston Acoustic Pro 6.5's in my 93 FD. I put the tweets up top on the door panels and the six inch woofers needed a half inch spacer. That's it. Nothing more, nothing less. Don't let anyone tell you they don't fit. Just use the spacer supplied with the the speakers. I am running Boston 6.5" rallys in the back for rear fill. Later I'll add one 10" JL Audio sub in sealed enclosure and be done with it. I'm running a PPI 50x2 amp on the the pro's and the Alpine deck runs the rears. It sounds awesome. You should hear the intro to Hot for teacher. Van Halen. WOW! The bostons kick *** on the low end frequency response. BTW I used a set of MB quart titanium tweets with this set up. I had them left over from an old system. I prefer the quart tweets. I set the boston crossovers to -3db's and it works flawlessly.

I'm running 6 1/2" thin Pioneers in the front and 6x8 Pioneers in the rear. I think deeper 6 1/2" in the front would work with a spacer and cutting the plastic behind the magnet. I just wanted a complete "screw in only" installation. No cutting any speaker mounts for the thin mount 6 1/2's. I don't run any real power so it thin works for me...
The 6x8 Pioneers in the rear install without any mods...
