FD rear end

Ok FD guys, i searched but couldnt find a definitive answer.

Are ALL the rear diffs the same on the US 93-95 cars? Did they all come with the torsen LSD carrier? Regardless of transmission or trim?

Further, did they ever make a change to it between the 3 years of US FDs?

I wanna buy a torsen for my TII FC, so i need to know if i can take any diff from any US 3rd gen car. Im not planning on using the FD ring and pinion because I like the 4.10 gears. I might even buy 4.30 gears.

they all came with the Torsen LSD. All manuals had 4.10 gears, all autos had shorter gears, IIRC

NOT. The FD Torsen diff is better for cornering....the TII clutch-pack diff is stronger for straightline driving. "Most" FD owners certainly do NOT swap this out.....

Higher power/single turbo FD guys tend to go for a different diff setup b/c they stock torsen has been known to break on the street during a hard shift with power levels of above 400 rwhp or so. As much as I loved my stock diff, I ended up having a cryoed S4 TII diff installed along with the RZ 4.3 gears. For the street I'm very happy with the change, I'll post up my experience next time I get on the road course

I have to agree, I destroyed my Torsen. Literally cracked it in half. Installed a Kaaz, and have not had a problem since.

Well mine is an S5, so it is currently the viscous. It still works ok but ideally i want a helical.

I do absolutly no launching or straigh line drag. All roadcourse and street driving.

Also My car will not ever produce close to 400 HP. I will be a little over 300 at most. I will always be using a sprung clutch so I dont expect to shock load the rear end abusivly.

Then you're good to go. 93-95 diffs are all the same, just different gearing for the manual 4.1 and auto 3.9.

unless your road racing the car, the Turbo II diff is just fine for the average person driving on the street..... and can take more of a shock than the torsen can. of course you can get a kaaz, but for the money the turbo II vlsd is a good option

You want a 17 year old VLSD with 100k on it? I dunno, i guess as long as you know what you are getting. You are NOT getting a clutch type.

The Kaaz can be noisy if you don't use the proper fluid/friction modifiers.

I destroyed my Torsen from an over-rev drag launch (almost stock engine). Since I don't drag race anymore, I kinda wish I still had a Torsen. It's quieter and smoother-engaging.

An S5 TII diff won't work in an FD...and me how I know.

The axle stubs are different lengths in the S5, where the FD (and S4) have symmetrical stubs.

And also if it isn't broken in properly.

That's why the S4 TII diff is such a great option----nice and stout like the Kaaz, but oem quiet unlike the Kaaz

Yeah, that's why Im thinking i might just post a WTB the remains of an FD conversion to the TII S4 clutch LSD. That would have all the stuff I needed, new housing, stubs etc, plus the torsen off the FD.

Yeah, I must admit, when the diff was going into my FD, I was a bit apprehensive about somehow getting screwed and being sold the wrong diff. Thank goodness it ended up being the real deal.
