FD Owners PLans For 2024

What is everyone up to this year?

Please select as many of the above items as you like. (You only can enter your selections once.)

This poll is open until mid-February, 2025. So if you are coming upon this late in 2024, tell us what you have done.

Regarding the "Spend Less Than" categories: Choose if you plan to spend any money at all on the item, but not more than $5000.

****************

After spending considerable funds on suspension and runabilty in 2023, barring breakdowns, I plan to focus more on taking long cruises, rather than AutoX, which I did 10 events over the last two years.

Our big local event each year is the Westcoast Rotary Sevens' Day which will fall on Sunday this year.

In the shop we are gathering pieces to put together 2 13B and a demonstrator 20B, and generally build familiarity with younger techs with rotary motors.

Making progress on my ill-advised construction and development effort that saw me go from attempting to go from "dual purpose" build to what is effectively a road race car with a license plate and registration for logistical reasons. I was pretty dead set on the "dual purpose" side of things until I got to drive a borrowed single turbo FD for a few slow laps at Pocono that lead to me pretty much swearing off street FDs, for better or worse.

I spent a period of 18 months with extremely limited funds due to some extremely inconvenient corporate tomfoolery that I had been affected by that had me selling parts to pay for school and rent, but it also gave me a ton of time to figure out what I wanted to do and how I was going to do it. I also came to the realization that preparing my car for a lot of the stuff I wanted to do to it would not cost me much of any monies, but quite a bit of time (which I had a lot of).

I believe I did a half decent job as my roll cage fabricator proclaimed that he has yet to see a better prepared chassis for fabrication, which I found some humor in.

I also took the advice of a certain forum member who often makes reference to the phrase "go to where the knowledge is". Surprise surprise, they were correct! I tracked down some of the folks who were heavily tracking third gens decades ago and was able to get some very good information and advice from them regarding setup and aspects of such an undertaking. I was also able to find good info on brake system design and (shock absorber) damping.

I'm starting to see the metaphorical "light at the end of the tunnel" with respect to the construction process, as the only major hurdle I had was getting the cage designed and installed, which appears to be moving along. Then I can start worrying about learning how to drive and get the most out of it. (I suspect it will drive in a similar manner as before I took it off the road as almost every change that was made was done to either increase the safety factor or increase component lifespan/decrease maintenance intervals when subjected to such use)

I have (so far) had way more fun than I had any business having doing all of this learning and interacting with the people who helped me get to this point. Future plans are to have someone familiar with the platform and performance driving help me set up the chassis. Then I'll aim to hit as many HPDEs and hill climb events as my purse will permit... (all in the name of learning, of course)

In other equally exciting news, Aarkaah and I are done (for the moment) messing with his 20b car that we put together. The turbo NSX has been rehomed and he has some other interesting stuff in the works, though he tells me that he is getting too old for this stuff. We may end up dragging it over to DGRR this year, which is exciting.

Just waiting for the warm weather to arrive so I can begin installing the Rspec bumper along with the undertray. I have to change over the mounting points for the oil coolers since the new bumper will benefit from the 99spec points instead of the 93spec points.
Aside from that, I hope to get the 2001 spec cluster installed. Since my current cluster has a few blown light bulbs. Have to constantly tap on them for awhile before they light up. lol
After those major things, I hope to recharge the A/C system
Throughout the year I hope to find a decent coilover rebuild place. I’ll definitely have to install the rspec coilovers next season. Won’t have the funds nor the time this year.
Otherwise, attend some meet ups and enjoy the car on those nice days..

I didn't fill out the poll because it's hard to say exactly what will require my money, vs. what I'd like to spend my money on.

Embarrassingly I need to return to my FD, which i left abandoned after wrestling the transmission for 2 days. I gave up and moved onto the FC project, which luckily has gone smoothly and refreshed my spirit for working on something else now that it's running and driving. My hope is my engine still has enough life and I don't have to yank everything back out again, but I do have a spare engine waiting if that ends up being the case. The difficult part is the scope creep of "while I'm in there", upgrading this and that and eventually spiraling way beyond your original scope. Let's hope i can keep the course and actually drive it for the first time since buying it nearly 3 years ago

I completed my rats nest and fuel system this year already. Other than a baseline dyno for a stock car and installing my AutoEXE intake I've had collecting dust I'll just be enjoying the car the rest of the year most likely. I'll follow up the intake installation with a dyno for curiosity as I'll do with the rest of my short list of mods. Then I'll be tackling the Cooling system and converting to Evans coolant next winter sometime.

Have animal strike damage repaired, fit vented bonnet, wing and front lip while doing it. Tear down and rebuild hopefully just soft seals for registration. Do some tuning/testing on stock ports then pull down for porting and repeat. Half cage, fixed back seats, factory big brakes, rebuild aftermarket LSD including extra pre-load springs and fit diff girdle, possibly step up to twin plate clutch if required. Free practice circuit days, small "hillclimb" at local club, maybe some form of autocross/sprint crossover events. Maybe a quarter mile to see what it does on a prepped surface. This will probably roll over into 2025.

My goal this year is to make it out to Westcoast Rotary Sevens' Day. For one reason or another, I have missed every local sevens day event since picking up my rx-7, so it feels like a redemption run of sorts. I'd also like to experience some track days this year.

I have no further plans for upgrades, but if I can find the time and money I'll be refreshing some suspension components and bushings. Theres lots of little things I want to upgrade, like the stereo, but they will unfortunately sit on the back burner for now. This year will be pretty hectic for me as I graduate and may move for a job or grad school, so I'm not entirely sure how much I will get done.

My focus for now is dropping my engine back in and finishing up the semester. Only a few more weeks until the snow is gone (hopefully) and I'll be back on the road

Car is perfect so nothing to do but oil change at mid-year, Cars & Coffee and take a weekly spin weather permitting.

I love a good clean engine bay, so close to stock aside from the air pump removal. Are you on PowerFC or something? I didn't see anything on it in your build thread

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! there may be a good many that might respond that way. Good to hear from you!

Many in our local group, long term owners, just overcome with family and work, but still very supportive of others in the community.

Normally the rear engine lift bracket is there? How is it different?

(I feel we are being a bit like "deshi" trying to catch the "sensei" out.)

Yup, the damper bracket looks kinda funky without the damper, so it definitely stands out.
