Hey, probably my first post... I'm somthing of an interloper from the RX8Club... perhaps I can get some advice from you good people!

A I may soon be swapping the blown engine in an FD for a good one stripped out of a written off car... suffice to say that I'm quite confident mechanically, but I'm hoping somone on here can tell me if there's any hints and tips that I should concider before doing it myself?? Any threads I should read?...

It's only an engine, right... shouldn't take so long to swap... ??

 

I just went through this. You should keep tabs on everything you take off as it is easy to forget which parts go where. I bought a bunch of plastic baggies and a sharpie and labeled the bags accordingly as I took bolts and small parts off. Also, it was easier for me to unbolt the pressure plate from the flywheel through the inspection hole on the tranny (bell housing). Of course I didnt have any of the special tools that make it much easier. Thats all I can think of right now that I had issues with when I replaced my motor. Im sure someone more knowledgeable than me will chime in sometime.

Hang on... why would you have to undo the pressure plate until after you had removed the engine??? I would have imagined that you would pull the engine forward until the gearbox input shaft disengages from the clutch, and then remove the engine... probably use new clutch on the new engine just becasue you can the the chance to replace it...

What have I missed??

also if you have a digey cam take pick of everything you take apart makes it alot easyer

 

You won't be "just" swapping the engine out. If you want to make sure it's mechanically sound, you will need to replace many things: vaccum hoses w/ silicone hoses, FPD (Fuel Pulsation Damper), check valves, all gaskets that you can get at (Lower Intake Manifold, Turbo housings), thermostat, all coolant hoses, and belts.
