FD Cup Holder

Yes yes, I know it is heresy. Yes, a sports car shouldn't have a cupholder ...but but but...I like my morning coffee and I am tired of burning my hand. I searched through the forums and couldn't find a vendor for the brackets that some people use to hang a cupholder off the area near the parking brake, so I made my own.

Parts:
Fischer Cup Holder http://www.ultimatecupholders.com/fischercupholder.html (which seems to be the same one that they sell at Griot's Garage : http://www.griotsgarage.com/catalog....2530&SKU=77830)
Can of Performix PlastiDip black rubber paint
1" x 1/8" aluminum bar stock
1" wide black velcro
4 locking nuts, 4 bolts

its pretty cool, and there HAVE been times that i would have killed for a cup holder in the FD.... but i still hate it on principle. i just dont even like the idea of HAVING coffee in the 7, eventually its bound to spill. if its a daily driver its understandable, but i was laughing when i looked at the interior of the new corvettes. how the hell are you supposed to drive fast with two beverages next to the shifter. i let it slide however cause its got a v8

/random comment about castrations.

I got one of those vacuum sealed coffee cups from Starbucks (for the record, I ******* hate Starbucks. But they make good travel cups). It's about $20.00 and it really does the trick. They DO NOT SPILL if you close the top. Period. I just fill up w/ coffee and lay the cup in the passenger seat.

Any other cups I either hold between my legs, or put between the back of the passenger seat and the storage compartments (with a shirt to cushion it)

For the record: good idea, don't get me wrong. Just not for me =)

Looks good with the exception of the locking nuts. They stand out too much for my taste. Perhaps some black rivets would have been a better/cleaner option to hold this together? How well does it hold cups?

Good job! It DOES suck to have to hold everything between your legs.

It holds cups pretty perfectly -- the cupholder part of this (the part I bought) is really well engineered and feels more solid than some of the cupholders that are OEM in cars.

I'm not crazy about the lock nuts either, but they were available

I did the same thing a few years ago with a Griot's holder (and I'm pretty sure I stole the idea from someone else on this board). However, I didn't even use it once - it just did not feel very stable, and a cup of Peets on my R1 seats did not seem appealing.

The shiney metal travel mugs. I'll take a picture of mine later today and post it. I bought it for use on my ship. Clip that bad-boy to my belt and off we go. That thing has been completely full and fallen down full ladderwells, dented the **** out of it but not a drop spilled. Only thing you need to look out for is when you first put the uber hot coffee in/sugar/cream and shake it up. The steam released can force the top open a little bit, just crack the top to relieve the pressure, re-seal and off you go! This cup has proven it's worth through three deployments (its on number 4 right now) over the past three years, and it's still goin strong.

Reminds me of that famous quote:
"Those who do not know history are bound to repeat it."

There are some old threads on fd3s.net and rx7.org about someone who did the same exact thing. If you search here, I'm sure you will find the pics. Looks exactly like yours.

Good job regardless!
