That advertsing thing reminds me on something that happened to me. I was purchasing a used car off a dealership and the saleman was trying to sell me on an extended warranty. I saw on the cover of the brochure that he handed me was an RX7. I told him that I didn't need anything on the car I was purchasing, but I would be interested in getting a warranty for my RX7 seeing that it is depicted on front cover of the brochure (the 7 had 45K miles at the time). He called the company and they would not warranty any RX7s.

I think you're all taking the term "ricer" too literally. I don't think Bajaman was worried about people junking up FDs with tacky body kits and neon, although that happens too frequently as it is. I think that what he was referring to was "ricer behavior". In other words, the education, knowledge, initiative, maturity, and respect typical lacking in younger owners...

FDs and supras are a ricers dream. it makes kids read magazines when theres one in it. it makes them buy **** when its on ads. just like the ferrari on my meguiars 3 step made me buy it, haha not really though.

but yeah when car costs less than a new civic, thats what happens.

fortunately a lot of ricers cant afford to maintain an FD or are scared by the horror stories so its not tooo bad yet.

This is a question that should be asked on another forum by and RX7 owner, we need outside opinions to really know what people think

You are pretty astute on my observations, Jimlab. Yes, it just seems that as the car becomes more and more available (paradoxically, since there are fewer and fewer of them) it has lost a lot of the appeal it had at one time. The near-supercar perception the general public had of the car is now greatly diminished, due in part to the behavior of some of the owners, movies, etc. Those of us that still drive and maintain the cars understand that there are still all too few cars that have the level of performance the FD has, but that doesn't change how a lot of people view the car. I have talked to several RX8 owners who rave about their cars and really like the history of the rotary engined cars, but to them the RX8 is a superior vehicle, they discount or dismiss out of hand the earlier cars, even the FD is some cases. More and more often when you say, "I have a 3rd gen RX7" you will get a basically blank stare, and no real sense that they want you to go on.
"Moving up the food chain..." pretty much sums it up, sadly. Where to go is the problem. Obviously the Corvette is a prime contender, especially the new C6. A lot of the other possiblities are kind of "designer" or "cars of the moment" cars, such as the Mini or even the new Lotus. Fad cars. The REAL issue here is the niggling desire TO separate oneself from the perception of the '3rd gen driver'. I still love my car, don't get me wrong. But I was seeing the trend (back when my car was running, lol!) developing. I often came out to a small crowd of people standing around the car, but the group was made up of teens primarily, with a high Asian interest by far. Nothing against Asians here by the way, it is just what I have seen. And they would generally be startled, amused...whatever that an "old guy" like myself was the owner of the car. For a variety of reasons, the FD is becoming the ride of choice amongst the young and all too often foolish. This IS shown from time to time and with increasing frequency in the posts on this forum. As you point out, there are some just ridiculous threads. And the people that post like this are the reason one is inclined to "move up the food chain"....distance yourself. MAYBE this is a self-fixing thing. As we have seen countless times, a lot of the current buyers of the FD end up wasting them very quickly.

well I'm 22 and I pretty much have worked on cars since I was 10. When I was 17 I was getting into imports more than domestic cars. I worked my *** off to get a Supra when I was 19, I loved it sooo much when I first got it, but after a year every time I took it out it would attract negative attention. EVERYONE would try to mess with me, if i left it somwhere it would get trashed (soda thrown on it, kicked, keyed, etc.) I got tired of everyone (mostly younger kids 15,16,17,18) always asking me ricer questions and wanting me to open my hood (like they would even know what they were looking at) It was pathetic. It came to the point where I'd rather drive my daily driver than take out my Supra (1995, manual, exterior stock, single turbo under the hood, 536rwhp). I noticed less rx7 around, and saw that they were clearly a superior tuner car than the Supra or less forgiving. I mean you can get really good #'s and reliabilty you just have to work harder for it. I've met so many Supra owners that bought there car single turbo and now nothing about it. I hate that. I'm almost 23 and I baby my car and hardly ever take it out, when I go out I try to maintain its reputation. I also have gotten the blank stare many of times when people ask me what car I have. Theres nothing I hate more than people who think the rx-8 is a better performance car. they obviously have no idea

All in all I know what your saying and undertstand your point.

I predict this thread will soon degrade into the utterly predictable "younger members justifying why they're not part of the problem and how dare we make generalizations about younger members" thread...

i think it is getting worse, in about 2-3 more years, the fd will be the next ricer's dream after their still growing civic phase.. cause in that time, the car's value will drop lower and they will be able to afford it like they can afford civics now..

since the time i had my fd, i think i had at least 8 teenagers compliment me on the car and telling me that they're already saving up for an fd.. so far, i havent see any other fds in my area that i dont know so hopefully they're just talking smack..

cause they dont deserve cars like these..stay with the civics..

You're too late, Jim! ;-)

I was just waiting for it to turn into the "kids under the age of [18|21|38] shouldn't be allowed to drive high HP cars because they'll just get themselves killed" thread.

Hmmm, if you can come up with the money it's your car. Freedom of expression should rule. If some 16 year old wants to turn one into a rice mobile, that's fine with me. He or she will not likely be out on the street selling drugs or screwing up society. A certain percentage are likely to be lost to irresponsible actions on or off the track. That's the nature of cars. I wish I could afford to own 2 or 3. I'd have one as a daily driver, another as a track car and one to save away in my time capsule. Use them, drive them into the ground, keep them pristine and unmolested. Those of use who take care of them will enjoy them the longest. I for one can't imagine driving anything else unless I inherit a fortune.

i know the sentiment exactly, but it's hard when everyone else is taking the low ball offers. i know people with FD's who don't understand asking more than 15k for anything but an insanely modded car...

that's what happens when you buy a car with a primary market consisting of 16-20 year olds... even if i did fall into that catagory when i bought it, lol.

Bajaman, for the record , I'm 50 and 1/2. You don't see many posts here by me because of all the misinformation, ignoramuses and such. I find little valuable info.
I have had 3 RX-3's and 3 RX-7's since I was 18 years old and have over 500,000 rotorhead miles on the resume. I knew back then , as well as now, very few young people, or old people for that matter, bothered to learn anything about cars, especially those with rotary power. Look how many RX-3's you see on the road, even first generation RX-7 are rolling piles now. I can recall many '79 RX-7 owners surprised when I mentioned the rotary engine they had been using.
A car is a piece of transportation. It goes from point A to B and other than that it is what you make of it. Take care of it and it will return the favor. Crappy cars come cheap. I would not sell my '95 for less than $17K even though it has 48,000 miles on it and looks used. Kelly Bluebook on one in excellent shape is over $20K last I looked.
The '93 had all the problems to sort out for the FD which is why I won't get an RX-8 until '05 or '06. It would be nice to have an old geezers thread here but like the old rotaries , we won't be here a lot longer.
Maybe we should teach "Rotorhead 101" to wise up some folks . I would love to get some youngsters around an old RX-3 and have them scratch their heads looking at the engine run with both distributor caps off the distributors. Man, that was good times. Kevin the geez

Well, this subject hits home for me especially because I am only almost 18. As if that wasn't enough, my 93 FD has a fully built streetported engine with a t78 setup. Putting down 450 reliably and trying for 500 within 2 weeks. With that said, I cringe if someone even associates my car with the word RICE. Most intellectuals know its so loud because obviously its a tuner car and has been modded, but then again many don't. For those, I probably am dubbed a ricer. Somehow, someway, this 17 year old, white, surfer/ rock climber switched his interests from Euro's to Imports and decided on an rx7 after selling the M3. I have fallen in love with this car and respect it in the same way any quality investment should be treated.

Thought I'd vent, I have been getting a **** load of looks from people that think my car is either to slow until 4500, (which they dont see LOL, to loud and droning (im young and i'd rather keep it that way than be grumpy and contain the inability to see someone elses interests), and last but always gotta play the race card; that white kid is driving an asian car.

On a side note, many younger people that are involved in their cars are just trying to be at the same level as most of you intelligent rotory heads. Here is the perfect place to learn to the individuals fullest extent, best of all it is free. We as a community can't hate on that as that is exactly what this board was made for in the first place. Also, in regards to bad spelling on the boards... Who actually writes posts here like they are meaning to seem educated? At least for the youth of today that I am involved with, we have been talking on the internet from day one and a whole lot of errors and slang are understood regardless of how choppy it may be.

food for though, bradley.

I dont know what you guys are so worried about, yea it sucks that people are ricing out the RX7 but let it go. The RX7 has seen a huge spike in popularity because of it, and more and more people now know the potential of the rotary engine. And dont worry about the young kids buying the cars because as soon as the motor blows they will try to get ride of the car because they wont have the money, and the only people with enough money to rebuild it will be more experienced people who will take car of it.

dont worry about it guys, all the younger guys are going to wreck the car or have to sell it.

Im a younger guy,but im not getting mad at these generalizations, I think the same thing you guys do, except I unfortunately belong to the younger age group. I can claim myself as responsible, but so does every other idiot out there.

And I can afford the car, but im not 100% positive I even will. Things get expensive, when you got school, rent, and other things to pay for.

so even though the price is low now, when they all get wrecked itll go back up.
