FD 6 speed tranny??

I remember awhile back that some aftermarket parts manufacturer was making 6 speed FD trannys. If my memory serves me right, it was Trust/Greddy?? Anyone know for sure? And if this tranny is still available, does anyone happen to know pricing or availability? Thanks in advance.

You're right about Greddy making the 6 speed tranny. I've heard about it as well. The problem is that it's supposedly only available in Japan, so you'll have to import it, which will be a little pricey. I've heard that it costs REDICULOUS money too. The figure that I heard was $6,000. That's a little steep for me. If you're that serious about a 6 speed, it seems like the kit that mates a Tremec tranny to a 7 bell housing could be the way to go. The Tremec's are nearly indestructable.
I don't know too much about the kit though(money, availability). I'm sticking with the 5 speed for now.

Quaife (A UK company) can also stick a 6th cog in there for you from what I've heard. But again it's VERY expensive also.

You honestly don't need a 6 speed tranny for your FD unless you've modded the hell out of it, or drop a 20B into it.

And what basis do you have for stating this information?

Quite honestly, just about any FD can benefit from the 6 speed tranny whether it be a relatively low HP modded FD or a high HP application. The fact is that while the FD has a rather high rear end ratio (numerically, 4.10) the actual gears themselves are spaced quite far apart, so that means when you shift the rpms drop quite a bit. With the 6 speed, provided you keep the final drive ratio the same, the rpms dont fall quite as much between shifts, meaning you stay more in the meat of the powerband. As much as i love my FD, i have to admit that between shifts it is a little slow to get back into the powerband due to the gearing.

Now, that being said, i'm sure that with the 6 speed offered by Trust or Greddy(whoever it is) that the tranny is not meant for extreme high HP applications. I'm guessing the tranny is pretty much at it's limits at anything over 550-600hp, which means a lot of 20B guys are out of luck. HOWEVER, for the people with single turbo setups in mind on pump gas (91-94 octane) this is good news. Since i eventually plan to run either a GT3540 or similiar type ball bearing turbo with 400-450hp in mind, i think the 6 speed tranny is a no brainer. Any thoughts??

BTW, anyone know who in the states can get the Trust/Greddy 6 speed? Pricing?

Dude, WTF? Those ratios are the EXACT same as the GREX from Trust i just found for the FD 6 speed tranny. I $hit you not, check this out...

If you did a search you should find my thread regarding the tranny. I made a call to one of the guys in Cali who would do it. The Tranny alone was around 9k which did not include the custum bell housing. He figured it would cost 11K for everything.

if you have a 20b you dont need a 6 speed, it has a wider, and taller torque band

Try and guess who makes the Trust/GReddy unit???
HKS makes a 6 Speed and someone is going to made an adapter to use the T56.
Really though the 5 speed is a great match for the rotary powerband.

could you use the stock ones in the current fd's in japan. maybe you can find a used one of those.

stock FDs have never had a 6 speed tranny. BTW, i checked on Trust's website and they list the tranny at 640,000 yen, which at current exchange rates comes in at about $5128 American. Am i to believe that it costs over 3 grand American to ship this tranny? That does not sound right to me...

I tend to DISAGREE for RX7s running the 13B-REW **without** a lightened flywheel. My experience suggests that while the FD has a low gearing ( numerically high final drive ratio), the actual gears themselves are somewhat tall. The fall between shifts is very significant. Like i stated before, I personally feel the Trust/Greddy 6 speed ratios favor a FD that is NOT making insane power levels and is still using the 13B-REW. This is my goal with my CYM. I would like to mate a Trust/Greddy 6 speed box with a 400-450hp target goal. I feel this is a good combination for both street and strip applications.
