fans running after shut down

On my 1993 RX-7 the cooling fans run for so long after shut down that the battery gets drained when making short trips. I've owned the car since new and this seems to be something recent. Any advice would be welcome

I changed your title. I thought you were a spammer when I first saw your thread.

How old is the battery?
How is the health of your charging system (alternator etc)?

Check was is listed above. Also, if you have a garage ALWAYS, open the hood when you get home. This will let the engine cool more quickly, and the fans won't run so long. This will also extend the lifespan of all the plastic under your hood.

My battery is new. Charging system is fine --puts out about 14volts. It's just those fans shouldn't be running so long, and didn't until recently. Could it be a sticking thermostat? What about changing the wiring so as to be "switched" with the ignition key? I don't see any reason they should run at all after shut down. No other car I have, or had, does. I'm sure not going to raise the hood every time I stop (including my garage--where is that in the manual?)

You might track down and read the DaleClark all about fan control and the fan system thread...

If your water temps are high, the fans are supposed to run after shutdown. Opening your hood after shutdown is something every FD owner should do.

You could always try getting a buffer battery.

Wasn't this a TSB? Fans stayed on and drained the battery and mazda put the little black box (not sure on the name) into the harness by the ecu. Correct me if im wrong on that one. I would check all the fan relays also.

Lol that should be part of the "you know you're an fd owner when...".

I have been popping the hood after shutdown since I first got the car.

If I leave the hood closed and leave the key to ON position, the fans will come on iirc 190f and wont stop til it goes below that.

I just pop the hood since I always use the fans manually during driving. I make those fan motors work. I know it will have to be replaced soon.

some fd have there fans run after shutdown some don't

my friends 93 automatic has fans running after shutdown

but my 94 5speed does not - i don't have much need for it right now with my larger radiator but i still leave the key in the ignition until temps go down

buy upgrading your radiator and new 50/50 coolant or 70/30 will reduce the time your fans stay on dramatically

you can look in to buying a replacement coolant temp sensor/ fan switch or using the one from FC is popular if i remember right -it makes the fans come on sooner and keep thing cooler if you don't have PFC
