Fans run until battery dies

ok the fd is finally working again after electrical problem. Shop found a short in the wire harness running to the meter fuse where it had grounded at the radiator bracket.

So everything is now working correctly except,

- Fans run until they kill the battery once the car is shut off...its probably the ten minute deal, but they run when the car is at only 185F or even less. To Fix this....pull the negative bat. wire,, or pull the fan fuse and wait 10 minutes

I do have a fan mod switch that functions perfectly when the car is off and fans are not running. So I do not think the switch affects this

and as a side note, the oil pres. and water temp. gauge backlights are VERY dim

looked at this again this morning...

- turning the car on/off within about 30 seconds and the fans do not come on

- driving the car for a few mins, the fans switch on on their own and continue to run for 10 mins after car is off unless I pull fuses/cut battery

Is this a thermosensor problem? Or a ground issue? It seems like something sensor related because a ground issue would run constantly

In addition you may want to check the fan relays for proper operation. Easy to check.

Because your car very likely has the coolant recall module installed, you cannot run a fan switch mod in the conventional manner like that listed on Dave Disney's site. The problem is that grounding three or more of the relays (for the fan mod switch to trigger the fans on medium or high speed) also triggers the module, which is set to run the fans for 10 minutes after shutdown. IIRC, you can only run the fans on low (grounding relays 1& 3, I think) without triggering the module using the fan switch mod.

At this point, you'll be better off removing all the wires for the fan switch mod from the relays, and see if that cures it.

well the fan switch was installed by the previous owner and has worked perfect for the past year....fans would cut on at 221F on their own unless I flipped the switch. switch would run the fans perfectly at medium speed...if a/c was on and i flipped the switch it would knock the fans up to high

I dont know how they are wired...I see a black wire tapped into one of the plastic relay prong connectors

Car never ran fans after shutdown unless car went over 225F....now it always runs fan after shutdown for 10mins killing my small battery. Im thinknig about installing a circuit breaker on my battery so that I can simply cut the circuit

I would check your coolent temp sensor.

In my experience, with the coolant/fan recall module, if you ground the required relays after the thermoswitch has activated the fans on low speed at 221 deg F, the fan speed is increased to medium. However, if you try to ground the relays for medium or high before the thermoswitch activates, all it does is trigger the 10 minute run-on sequence. Basically, the relays have to grounded/energized in sequence (IIRC, in this order: 1&3 for slow, 1, 3, &4 for medium, all four for high); if you try to shortcut the sequence, you may get medium speed, but it also triggers the 10 minute run-on sequence upon shutdown. This is why when your A/C is on (which activates 1,3, and 4 relays), when you flip the fan mod switch, you get high speed-- the fan switch mod increases the fan speed one step when the other relays are already energized.

I think the one you circled is the coolant level sensor. The coolant temp sensors are located on the backside of the filler neck and rear portion of the engine block...

Word. Rear iron, to be exact

goodfellas,

what you are saying makes sense, but I have not been using my fan mod switch because the fans run constantly on their own and continue for 10 mins

Read my last post (#8) again please. What I'm saying is that you probably have a ground fault somewhere (very likely in the wiring in the fan switch mod) that is triggering the 10-minute shutdown sequence. Because you have the coolant/fan recall module, if you ground one of the relays out of sequence (before the proper relays are energized), all it does is trigger the 10-minute shutdown sequence (running the fans for 10 minutes after shutdown).

ok i finally got back on track trying to figure out this wiring problem

this is what is happening now:

I start the car and fans cut on afte running for about 3-4 mins. Shut the car off and fans continue to run for 10 mins unless I pull the fuse.

I have a fan mod switch thats a small black wire running directly into ONE of the relays...I can turn the fans on/off when the engine is off and they run on medium

Where do I start with the troubleshooting?

Remove your fan switch mod and see if the problem persist. If it doesn't then what you did for your mod is causing the problem.
