Failed Air care

Hi, my 94 rx7 twin turbo failed air care last week. My mods are the following:downpipe and catback. The area i failed on was exhaust emissions. Here is my numbers below

Hydrocarbons- vehicle reading: 0.7643

Maximum allowable- 0.5000

Carbon Monoxide-vehicle reading:12.5682

Maximum allowable-9.3200

so what's causing me to fail? i only have a downpipe and catback. I have my main cat installed aswell. My 02 sensor works fine aswell as the airpump. Any suggestions or techniques to pass here?

I just passed aircare a lil while ago..

I also have catback and downpipe, and i failed as well..

I found out that i had a broken vacuum hose, but after fixing that my car still failed.. i just took off the downpipe and put the stock pre cat back on, and passed no problem..

I dont really have to put on a precat here do i? i thought you could easily pass air care with just a downpipe and catback. I dont have a precat for my car, so that wont due me any good for passing air care, anybody else?

Was your car fully warmed? Spark plugs pretty new? Run one of those smog check in a bottle and see if that helps. Also, there is a black chamber/box in front of the UIM that you can blow clean with some compressed air. That's supposed to help too. You shouldn't have to put the precat if the car is hot enough.

Don't feel bad, my '94 Touring is bone stock except for a Trust muffler and I still failed. The first time I just thought that the CAT wasn't warmed up or that I had crap built up in the exhaust, so I took it on the highway for about an hour and went to get it tested again. The results of the second test was worse than the first!! I'm guessing that it might have something to do with a bad sensor, dirty plugs/filters or TPS needs adjusting. Also might have something to do with the fact that the guy performing the test took revved it way over (as in into the red zone) the test line repeatedly.

Good luck passing.

You'll find it below and just to the left of the throttle body.

Check to make sure that the hose going to your cat is ok. When I replaced my motor I found a hole in mine. I have no idea how it got there but I doubt my car would pass with it there. Also if the guy testing your car doesn't drive the car right you will fail. If the car goes into boost during the test it will fail. There is a thread on here some where with info on how to wire in a switch to keep you boost levels down. If you put this switch in it would not let the guy testing the car boost it during the test. This would definitely increase your chances of passing.

My cousin took is car through once and the idiot driver boosted it on the acceleration points of the test. It failed. He took it through again, with no changes to the car, the tester didn't boost it and it passed.

Here is the link for the switch mod.

Hope this helps.

To blow that out and make any difference you will need an air compressor. It is a good idea; regardless of the gas you use to change your fuel filter every 24 000km. If you don't you are playing with fire. It is a shitty job, but anyone with the time and some brain cells to spare (believe me you will lose a few doing this job) can do it.

TPS is Throttle Position Sensor

Thanks Adam! I think i will take it to aircare again and tell the tester not to boost it during the test.
