EXTREME Excitement and Happiness(long)

I am so pleased to be reporting this bit off info, I still cant believe it though.
A major car mag has just tested the new GT40, F360 Stradale, and 911GT3. I am pleased to report the my 1993 RX7 R1 is as a fast as 2 of these cars and only slightly slower that one of them!!!!!
These cars were tested Gingerman Raceway in South Haven Michigan. My lap times in my 10 YEAR OLD R1 are equal to these new state of the art monsters. How can this be you ask? Well, I will tell you.

1) I have all the bolt on stuff M2 makes.

2) A PFC tuned by me and with a little help from the guys at A SPEC.

3) STOCK non seq. twins on a 20,000 mi reman.

4) Wheels and tires by CCW 18x10 all around.

And thats about all.
Simply amazing!!
But wait there is more,
Soon to have:
1) A-SPEC GT40 Single turbo kit Looking to get 420 to the wheels
2) A NEW brake kit In development by me and with a little help, no, a lot of help from M2. They will have Distributorship of this kit.
With these mods I feel confdent I will soon be lapping Gingerman at 1:29.5 to 1:30.5 and forking out doom on 911s F360s and the new GT40
Thanks To M2 and A-SPEC for help and development of such great parts.

At the end of the day you still own a Mazda, cannot break 200mph, are no where near as reliable, and they can pass SMOG much easier than you or I can.

So they paid 100k+ too much for their cars, can't go 200 mph anywhere anyhow, and my single turbo street ported FD can FAST PASS the IM240 dyno roller test!

I agree with TrippleT. Anyone that knows me can attest to the fact that I probably love my car more than life itself. But I still think I'd rather have a GT (by the way, the new ones are called "GT," not "GT40". Ford lost the rights to the GT40 nameplate). That thing is just an amazing machine.

But either way, mad props to you on your car and your times. Thats definately something to be proud of. Chalk up one more for the FD!!!

unlikely to help your lap times at all, in fact, it will probably decrease them....all you will get is more wheelspin and more lag compared to the stockers

KX,
There is a guy that tracks with us in a Rippie ZO-6, and Admittedly is faster than i am, he is also a pro racer that used to race Trans am. His 500 HP ZO 6 doesnt seem to have a wheelspin problem. Now is the GT40R turbo a bit laggier than stock twins? likely yes. But at GMAN, I am never under 4000 RPMs at any point on the track. So will lag be an issue?

You will make more than 420whp that's my guess, and we'll see about the lap times.

tractability and usability of the power is the issue

a single turbo FD delivers it's hp/torque over a relatively narrow rpm band, making it more difficult to modulate than a Z06, for example....you may go fast, but you will work much harder at it than your Z06 buddy or someone in a 911TT will....from talking to a guy that roadraced a very heavily modded FD (like $40k in mods, single turbo, big brake kit, and all the ****) at VIR for several years, the Porsches just plain go faster with far less effort and sweat than an FD can

good luck...I'm all for underdogs, but a smooth power delivery curve is a huge advantage

speaking if cheap, I'll take all of you on with my bone stock YZF-R1, for about 1/5 the price

Most single turbo FD's make full boost around 4000rpm. Now with a redline of 8000 rpm (and most single turbo FD's make good power all the way to redline), thats 4000rpm of good usable power. Now if you have a high quality built motor, a 9000rpm redline is possible, which will give you 5000rpm of usable power. How can you call this a narrow range?

Awesome stuff man

Lap times don't lie. The attitudes of some of the guys on this forum amaze me. If you don't like your mazda, sell it. Seems to me like way too many people around here are of the "glass is half empty" variety.......

Right on! This thread went sour WAY to soon.

And come on TTT, these exotics are more reliable? Especially a Ferrari... You're kidding right?
Come to think of it, I dont think I've ever seen a Ferrari with over 50k on the odometer...

thats because ferrari owners are too scared to drive their precious automobiles.. what fun is that? And I can break 200mph. Infact my redline is set at 9,000 rpms with full race bearings and that leaves me around a 240mph topspeed.. do i have the ***** to do that? Not nearly but its posible.

Considering I will most likely never own or even drive those other cars, I am happy to drive my little FD "super car".

Well......
I think there are definitely two types of Ferrari guys:
Those that love the car and are true enthusiasts, and those that are simply collectors that have 'garage queens'.
Case in point is when the first of the F40s came to the states. One of the car mags did an article on this. The two cars arrived in Houston (I believe) and the differences in the owners were made quickly apparent.
First car went to a guy that had a custom transporter there, it was PUSHED into the transporter and the doors closed and off it went, nary a word from the owner who wouldn't "condescend" to speak to the editors of the mag.

Now the other guy takes his car, invites the press and assorted other common folk to some nearby track where he proceeds to do hot laps with anyone that is willing. Guys are letting their KIDS ride with him and when asked why one father replied, "When will my son and daughter EVER get this opportunity again, to ride in a car like this?"
I just thought it SO ******* cool of this owner, he used up his tires and gas, took some chances with a true exotic automobile but was WILLING to do so! THIS GUY ROCKED! He spent the entire day doing this, and there wasn't a non-smiling face in the group!

Anyway, great work 1RedR1.....that is one fine FD you have created for yourself!

Attitudes around this place kill me to Rich.

A FD is a 12+ yr old design, sure if you mod the hell out of it you can beat a more expensive car. The problem is that it isn't really a fair comparison at that point.

A 13B with huge HP is pretty much going to have a narrow powerband, all-in-all that is harder to deal with than a big fat powerband of a 5.4V8 that is supercharged.

I'd like to see someone drive a non-seq FD then get into the GT3, GT, or 360 then tell me how much better of a car the FD is.

FDs are cool but they aren't the best.

Well put. I love my FD and what it does to my wallet... But honestly, I know it's not the ****. It's a very average (Although I still believe it's design is purely beautiful) car at best.

Keep it all in perspective, people.

The FD is a work of art, a true genius of a car that comes around only once in a while.
Huge kudos to Mazda engineers to make a car that can still hold its head up high after years of service in its original form..... a true testimont to how great the design is.

At the same time, there simply is no way it should be considered in the same category as true exotics.
Love the FD for what it is....not for what it is not.

That's not the case. FD owners already do the same thing with lesser cars. As soon as a kill is posted about some souped up car like a VW, Stang or some other car being faster than an FD all they hear is "Yea but its still a VW (Stang or whatever it is).

That's the same with any car. You can put as much money into any car you want and make it fast, however at the end of the day, it's still whatever it was to begin with no matter how fast it is or what cars it can "beat".

godzilla remember what happened to the rx7 in the salt flat vid that tried to go like 230 or something.

Anyways, why does this compairison keep coming up. If i had a full done 50,000$$ rx7 and somone offered me to trade it for a ferrari, you better bet i would do it. Any one of you would. dont lie.... Besides if i modded a ferrari as much as i modded my fd it would tear it up, no lube.....

I love my fd, but make a fair compairison.

the other thing is, and I'm not taking anything away from RedR1's track times, I think that's awesome, but quite frankly magazine writers are notoriously slow on the track

no offense to kento....he is an exception to this
