Explination of what a Pettit unlimited ECU does

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I dont fully understand what a pettit unlimited ( or any similar ECU, PFS, M2, etc.. ) does exactly. Im not new to aftermarket ECUs and rotarys ( I had a Haltech E6X for my FC ), but with all the different options for the FD Im a bit confused. Does the pettit need tuned, or is it pretty much just plug and play? And if so, can someone please explain why it is ok to run more boost with it ( up to 14psi I believe?). Does it have fuel/ignition maps loaded for that much boost, or what?

I just know on my FC once I reached the limits of the stock fuel/ignition system , it is pretty much required to go to a standalone such as the haltech or microtech, get dyno tuned, etc.. so Im a bit leary of "chipped" ECUs, so i want to get a better understanding of what these do before I go looking to upgrade. Thanks..

The Pettit, M2 or other rechipped ECU's are just remapped stock ECU's. They have all the features of the stock ECU (i.e. running the OMP, solenoids, etc) however they have a different map loaded.

So, it doesn't get tuned. It's basically, one map for all. Pettit does not recommend running over 13 PSI with their ECU unless using Race gas.

the M2 Stage3 I use is programmed for 12 psi, intake-intercooler-downpipe-catback and fairly rich so some people, myself included, up the boost to 13~14.

Mine leaned a bit at the top end at 13.5 psi so I lowered it and got a Walbro pump.

These ecu's are fairly safe if you stay at 12, 13 psi tops. Once you start to want more, a standalone like the PowerFC is a better choice

Thanks, I was originally going to just buy a powerFC, but then I started reading more about these chipped ECUs. Its a pretty new thing coming from the FC world where we really dont have anything like that ( beside the R-tek, but that just came out). May I ask how much power you are making at 13psi with those boltons?

Thanks alot, I think I may lean toward that route. Its not that Im cheap and cant afford a powerFC or another standalone, its just Ive leard from my FC that its very easy to get yourself in too deep with modifications. Before I knew it I had a car with thousands upon thousands of dollars into it ,with a huge turbo , racing seats, roll cage, coilovers, etc... and honestly it just wasnt fun anymore. It was basically a race car.. Id taken it too far. I dont want to do that with my FD, just mild mods that will make it fast enough (low- mid 12s in the 1/4..) and still be very drivable when need be.

I got about 340 to the rear wheels at 17 lbs with stock sequential twins and 103 octane. The basic bolt-ons do a lot & if you get a tuneable ecu, spend some money on a tuner's time. Nothing wrong with the Pettit Unlimted or the PFS PMS. Both are fairly cheap used and both work well with the sequential twin set-up

Get a down pipe, cold air system and bigger, medium sized, stock mount intercooler, high flow cat and cat back and either the Pettit or PFS unit. Stop there and you will be well into the mid to low 12s.
