Exhaust question?

Guys I am having emissions nightmares here. I failed three times yesterday. My readings were - 1st test HC-2400 O2- 747, I realized that the car had sat for 6 months with some race fuel in it and prior to that I actually added 2 gallons of 106 leaded. I know, but thats all I could get and I was buying a new cat. So anyway, those tests were on the stock cat and DP, that once passed the same test with HC- 11 O2- 0. I know I can't believe it said that, but it did. So I drove off the gas in the tank and then added some emission lowering fuel treatment and got some 87. I drove the highway back at 80 miles an hour to the station. I tested the second time at HC- 99 O2- 365, that was 165 higher than the limit. SO something worked great, but not good enough. I had a surge and was thinking that is was causing the high O2 readings, this was at the 2400 rpm range. Well I figured out it was a ground strap problem. I hooked a new one and no more surge. I went straight back to the station one more time, he threw the sniffer in there and it was way back up in the 1400 HC region. I was stumped. WHat happened between the second and third test that made it go from 99 to 1400. Well after searching, I came to the conclusion it had to be the cat. So I installed the high flow cat from the 7 store and am going to try it again, this time with some denatured alcohol added to the tank right before I pull in. BTW, this is all on the stock ECU. Now when I am under changing out the cat, I figure I might hook a fish tank air pump up and tap into the air inlet hose on the cat and run it inside the cab. Well I find this check valve between the air pump and cat. Here comes the question, how important is the check valve right before the cat? I want to run a hose straight from the air pump pipe to the cat. Can I do this and what will happen if anything? BTW sorry about the novel.

Edit: also the test that passed in 2004 with the readings HC- 11/CO- 0 was on the same exhaust set-up as yesterday, no changes. Who thinks it was the cat? Car is running awesome and hitting full boost, vac is 15 inhg, idle is steady as hell?

I just installed the cat and drove to the gas station for some 91. IS it normal for a new cat to smell really bad? Like does it have to bake first before it stops smelling, or is there something else wrong?

You need the air pump and air injection system properly functioning to pass the test. It sounds like this is your problem to me.

well, I failed again. This time with the high flow cat and PFC hooked up. The air pump is there and it looks like it works. I did remove that check valve before the cat and after the air pump. It stinks though, I also ran it on the freeway first. I did noy use denatured alcohol. I am a little weary considering what I have heard about that. Anyway, I have no clue and looks like I may not be getting a registration. Could it be an O2 sensor, how does that effect the test? also what else could be involved that is causing my HC and CO to be 1400+ and 8.7? this is mind boggling. This is a real test of my patience. Thanx to anyone that can explain where next to look for problems?

who knows of the cheapest place to get the stock O2 sensor replacement? probably Ray, but I am losing hope here as to passing emissions. This is truely a nightmare. I am tapping in an electric air pump to the cat. I have to get this to pass if its the last thing I do. anyone?

why don't you find someone with a stock cat and plug it in?

TT, that's exactly what I am going to do. Its just bad timing, they are supposedly doing away with emissions here in my county in Oct. So off to the mountains I go. Thanx. **** trying to get this TT rotary engine to pass at such low numbers. I have no idea why things changed so much even test to test. I mean I almost passed except for at 2500 rpms the numbers were too high on the second try. Its BS. I will end up paying thousands and maybe not even pass. **** giving the jiffy lubes anymore money. I already wasted like $50, good thing I do my own work. I have one more try for free at Jiffy lube, but honestly I am done with those damn smog test situations. My car is running like a champ, f what they say. We do have ways around it and no its still cool with me. Oh BTW, I just moved to Park County, Colorado. Wanna come snowboarding?
