Exhaust leak

can a bad gasket at the down pipe and midpipe cause boost leak?

No. I've had significant leaks there but boost doesn't change.

If anything, a huge leak there would reduce backpressure and increase the boost.

Boost (vacuum) leaks are formed in the intake tract...not the exhaust. Hose clamps, hoses, intercooler, etc..all areas where boost (vacuum) leaks occur frequently.
