Lightbulb Exhaust leak = more power?

I've been experiencing some unusual backfire from underneath of my FD, I'm pretty sure that the gasket is gone between my dp and cat. At first the volume of the backfire wasn't that bad (the funny thing is that it pops when I drive slowly, like through a fast food drive through or on my driveway). But now (about once a day) it backfires unexpectedly WAY too loud! Any drawbacks on having a leak there? Should I fix it?
