Exhaust Install Questions

Hey everyone,

I was out installing my RB Dual exhaust today, and I stumbled upon a few problems. Ever since I purchased the car, there seems to be this rattle coming from the exhaust. I chalked it up to being a heatshield hitting the exhaust at some point, but after getting underneath the car today, I came to a new conclusion.

It sounds like the rattle is actually coming from inside the resonated midpipe. Is there something in the construction of the midpipe that could break and cause this rattle? If not, i'm gonna keep searching for the rattle, but it sure sounds like it's coming from there.

Second, the RB dual exhaust has this bracket welded onto the front of the muffler. Currently, my exhaust is only hanging from the one stock bushing on the underside of the bumper, and that bracket is not hooked up to anything. After consulting the (sparse) instructions for the exhaust, it seems like that bracket actually does something and hooks up to the underside somewhere. But where? My exhaust won't even rotate enough to attach anywhere (but I did bolt the downpipe in fully and then attach the muffler). Any help guys? Thanks.

EDIT: I figured i'd throw this q in to save bandwidth on the forum. I've been wanting to install the rear bins, but I have the Kirk Racing Bar in the car. How high are the bins? I don't know how to tell if the bar is for the bin deletion or not. There is a horizontal bar running across at about the level where the trunk carpet starts. Any thoughts appreciated.
Chris

Sounds like a clogged cat but you have a dp and a mid pipe so I don't see how it would be making any noise. Pull the midpipe and see if anything is stuck in the resenator part. About the bins, they sit just a couple inches shorter than the level of the carpet. I don't know if the bin lids will come in contact with the bar if opened, where exaclty is the bar located.

Thanks Street King,

That's what I thought too, but i'm 75% sure it's coming from the midpipe. And for the bins, I just want them for aesthetics. Ill take a pictures of the horizontal bar, but it seems right in line with the carpet 3 inches in front of the slope down.

A resonated Midpipe is just a muffler built into the pipe to help quite things down, if I remember correctly it bolts onto the downpipe and the back bolts onto the catback and there is a rubber hangar to hang it up in the back, then for the catback there is 1 hanger not too far from where the midpipe bolts up to the catback, and two hangars at the rear of the car just behind the bumper. So your bracket hanger should be hooked up to a metal peice up there. If you cant get it to go in just soak it with some WD40 and it will slide right in. As for the rumbling in the midpipe, its possible a rock or something could have fallen down your exhaust and into the midpipe chamber or something, you could unbolt your midpipe and hold it upside down and shake it to see if anything comes out. Hope that helps.

If you had another aftermarket exhaust on the car, you are missing a bracket on the passenger side at the rear of the car. Just get a new one from Mazda, they're less than $10.

A rock? That doesn't sound too good...it looks like i'll be pulling off the dp tomorrow (btw it's a Pettit Racing model dp).

Also, the two hangars are the ones that are perplexing me. My old exhaust held on in the back with two rubber bushings (one straight behind the bumper and one near the passenger side of the bumper). The RB exhaust has an accomadation for one of the bars to slide into the bushing, but then uses some kind of a bracket that needs to be bolted to something. This, I don't know where it bolts. Doh.

Thanks everyone.

Yeah I'm having a similar issue. I just installed the RB dual cat back and it is clunking all over the place. The long hook shaped hangar on the right side of the rear of the muffler is bumping against the body. Really annoying...

There is a 2" tab with 2 holes on the rear exhaust and I'm thinking they need to mount to these two bolts that are on the bottom of the trunk floor plan, but I didn't see anything about that in the instructions.

Any comments from anyone in the know?
