Evans coolant upgrade... the other necessities.

I have already done a search and can't find a solid source for the 'other necessities' needed for the Evans coolant switch.

1) A source for the 180 deg. thermostat, where are you guys getting these?

2) A source for a 7lbs radiator cap that is the stock size

On a side note, some say run zero pressure and some say run low pressure....pros/cons of either?

To convert to zero seemed easy enough, it was mentioned to remove the rubber seal on the radiator cap (on the coolant neck, not ast). I see how that aloows for zero presure but dosn't that also allow for some sloshing coolant to leak out of there since it is not a solid seal?

All I did was eliminate the expansion tank and use the zero pressure cap as my radiator cap. One of the factory caps has no spring/plunger and is perfect to cap the system for 0 psi. I run a stock thermostat with a couple of holes drilled in it to flow a bit more coolant.

ahh, ok...so the stock coolant neck cap has no spring/plunger...so that is what you used twokrx7?

I though that cap is the one you needed to remove the rubber seal from in order to make it 0 pressure?

hmm, interestingly enough, I just removed my STOCK 95 thermostat and it was marked 'n3a1 ntc 82degrees C'

and 82deg C = about 180 deg F, so the later cars must have a 180 thermostat already (?)

also, I have found out that to turn a pressure cap into a zero pressure cap, you remove the LOWER rubber seal. This is on the cap that goes on the ast, not the filler neck. The filler neck is already a zero pressure cap, so if you have two you can just put one on the ast and then you have a zero pressure system.

I have two extra AST type oem pressure caps. You can have one for the shipping. I'll drop it off at my local shipping store later this week.

Also, my 94 base has a 180 degree thermostat built in. I.E. it's oem equipment. I thought that FDs used a 180 degree thermostat as a general rule.

thanks for the offer james...

yep, you are right james on the 180 themostat...I just didnt get it until i pulled mine out (heheheh)

when you say AST type you mean it will fit on the AST but it is not a pressure cap, right? In other words it is like the cap you would put on the filler neck.

It's the pressure type that are normally present on the AST and not the non-pressure type on the filler neck. I.E. you'll still have to remove the smaller, middle rubber seal to create a zero pressure cap. I just figured that it would be nice to keep your original cap undamaged ... just in case.
