Hey guys,

I've never had an engine on an engine stand before. I'm about to mount my engine on a stand and I just need to know if I should use grade 8 bolts, or if the standard Home Depot steel/zinc bolts are ok. I searched but couldn't find an answer. Any thoughts?

It's cheap insurance to use the grade 8 bolts. I wouldn't be comfortable using any thing less.

 

Uh....whynot just make sure and use grade 8 anyway?

 

Because they're harder to find by me. Metric bolts in general aren't in great supply at the stores near me.

standard bolts will work just fine. i think the last time i had an engine on the stand

It all depends on what size bolts, how they are mounted, etc. A 3/4" grade 2 is stronger than a 3/8" grade 8.

I personally prefer the highest grade you can reasonably get, but usually it's not a big deal. If you can get grade 5 that should be plenty - the auto parts stores usually have higher strength fasteners than the hardware store.
