After a lot of searching, I figured I'd post and ask.

I'm pulling the engine for an engine swap. The last time I pulled the engine, I followed the Mazda directions and dropped the trans before pulling the engine. A pain in the *** and some extra work.

I've read about pulling just the engine leaving the trans, but I tihnk engine mounts and seperating it from the trans can be an issue.

Pulling the engine and trans seem possible, but wanted to see if what people's thoughts were on it.

Just wanted to see what most people who have done engine pulls do and what the tricks are?

Remove hood. Have friends. save the beer for afterwards. mark everything.

can do it either way. Although, I am going to do it with the trans and engine still together.

Edit: and depending on shop height - I have mine about 14 inches up on jack stands, which helps to get the engine and trans at an angle to remove it. Other wise, If i were to try it without out a tall shop and a foot ff the ground, I would separate them.

I pulled the engine and trans together and it wasn't that difficult, and I had never pulled an engine before. From what I remember, the re-install was uneventful as well. You and a buddy should be able to do it. The only real problem I ran into was loosening the PPF nuts; the six inch extension bar I had on my impact wrench was robbing it of all its torque.

I would recommend that you pull the engine with the trans attached.

I had never pulled an engine till I started on my FD and pulled it with the tranny still on and installed it with it on.

I've done it with the trans left in the car and with the motor and i think it is a bit easier pulling it with the motor

if your goin to do it with the trans on which i think is easier take of the shifter just to be safe.

This is why the forum is great. Consensus seems to be to keep the trans bolted on and pull as one unit.

The good thing is that I have the car on a lift, so changing the height and getting under it isn't a problem.

It does seem to be a lot easier the dropping the trans first and holding the engine with an strut brace.

Personally, I like to drop the trans first, then pull out the motor. then i drop the motor in first and then pop in the tranny. But then again i have a single turbo and not as many parts around the engine. i guess that plays a big part

I just unbolt the motor from trans and pull the motor all by itself. I have dropped the trans to do a clutch several changes and knowing whats involved with that I would never do it to pull the motor.

I pulled the engine and transmission together (and it doesn't require removing the hood). I like having the transmission out because sometimes it's a bear mating them back up and it saves frustration in that case. I also feel it is easy to fubar the pilot bearing if you're forcefully stabbing things together.

Word, I picked one up at a similar type store (STEVE'S WHOLESALE TOOLS) and it only cost $20

I agree, it was not neccessary. But it made things a little easier with the vertically challenged help I had on hand.

And I completely agree on the keeping the trans and engine together. You have more space and precision to mate things back up afterwards. Less chance of fubaring something.
