Engine Porting and ECU question

Kinda like this thread but not really https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...hreadid=240790

Ok I know the right thing to do is to get ECU upgrade but I'm running on limited funds here and it's time to make a decision.

My car was 100% percent stock before my engine blew. Yes I know DP, AST, miata thermo switch but service contract issues did not allow me to do them. But that's not the case anymore.

I am currently getting a new engine on my car. Dp and AST are already bought and being delivered. Miata thermoswitch along with with miata thermostat (gotta check if it fits) are coming soon (before engine is done). Radiator gonna hold off for a little bit. Bank is currently broken...

Ok I was talking to my engine builder. He is suggesting a mild exaust porting since I have a stock ECU. I agree with him that I don't need an ECU since the porting is done on the exhaust and air/fuel ratios are not affected. How much/where do I gain with an exhaust port? Is it worth it? Now with the DP installed would it not cause a boost creep? YES I have a boost gage. But am I headed into dangerous ground? Boost creep can be controlled obviously with a boost controller. Is that all I need? Or am I over looking something?

Near future plans include- high flow cat, cat back but do I need an ECU at this point? Again since nothing would had been performed on the intake side? Not worring about boost creep since a boost controller would definetly be needed by now.

Now in the far future- It would be intake, SMIC and obviously an ECU. Power FC. But this is very far away, gotta life to live that requires money ya know.

Now do you guys agree with this order? I care more about reliablility than anything else.

Thanks in advance.

If you port out the exhaust side you will need to make fuel adjustments.
Its like adding a mid pipe.
You will lean out.

As far as controlling boost. As long as you have a decent controller you should have no problems.

i wouldnt. on a turbo motor you realy dont want to raise the roof on the port at all, this is not a N/A motor where raising the roof is recomended and will add to your peak HP. presurised intake charge in a turbo motor will blow by into the exhaust. just sorta square it up adn add a radius to the changes from horizontal to vertical walls to allow a nice transation.... if anything you should lowr the floor not raise the roof. its not worth it IMO to do it especialy if you are running a OEM ECU.... the reason you are porting is because you have to think of your motor as a large air pump. the more air you can push through it efficiently, the more power. if you are looking to get more air out with out adding more air in and fuel for that air.... why do it. ask your mechanic what his logic in trying to sell this job to you is. i am curious.
and my advice is my $.02 so take it or leave it....

Thanks guys. I think I'll just go the safe route and just do a regular rebuild. Then as I go I'll modify properly.

I don't race nor anything so it's not worth it for me to try and "get what I can get away with" on my car. Besides I live in Cali and I have to worry about smog. With out the PFC and with a ported motor smag pass seems rather difficult.
