Engine fans

Since two of my engine fans don turn on, the rx7 place out here told me to leave my ac on. My ac has no free-on in so i guess its not taking power from the car? I just need to be cleared up on if i am loosing power since I was told the ac was not turning on. Is there anyway to check and see if its working?

Ummm...
there are only two fans on the radiator. Are neither of them turning on, ever? Cooked engine will result. Yeah, I know, he can drive it to cool it off, but if he sits in traffic any length of time...

Are they just not turning on soon enough for you? Then the A/C trick can work. When kicking on the A/C, if the system has no freon, you risk pump seizure. Best thing to do is pull the A/C relay. It is in the box of relays in the very front of the car, UNDER the flat black platic box that is held with two 10mm bolts. If you pull that relay, the A/C pump will never be turned on, but the fans will come on when you press the A/C button inside the car. I don't know if you need to turn the inside blower fan on to the first setting to trigger this or not, though...

Hope this helps!

Pull the hood release. Then go to the front of the car. lift up the hood. Use the prop rod to hold it in place. You don't want the hood to fall on your head. Next, look to see if the fans are working. If they are spinning, that means they are working. If they are not spinning, then they are not working.

Heh, as spurvo said, if you continue to run your A/C with no freon, you'll fry the pump after a while. And yes, in order for the fans to come on when turning on the A/C, if the cabin fan setting is at "1", it depends on the coolant temp; once it's set at "2" or higher, they come on automatically. So if you're asking how to check the fan operation (hard to tell by the way your post reads...), you can follow adam's instructions...

Ok, smart guy , I know that the fans are not working.

Spurvo: i'll try and do what you said, thanks.I know my post is a little confusing, I just didnt totally understand leaving the ac on. But if i dont have freon im still loosing hp, correct?

no with low freon the car will increase idle speed etc, turn the fans on, but the magnetic clutch on the compresser will not engage

The engine fans are not turning on because a wire is broken. I'm going to get it fixed soon.

Spurvo: I found my ac relay, but are you saying that is held by 10mm bolts or the box is? Neither look to have any bolts on them....

Damn, I sound like a newbie!

By any chance...is your engine running rich?? The reason I ask is that, I had a similar problem where I was driving with the A/C switch on because my fans would not come on, in addition, my engine would run super rich. The problem I had was the water thermosensor and/or thermoswitch. Not sure which 'cause I changed both...since then my problems are completely gone!

Mad7tist is right, if your out of freon the clutch won't engage....

Edit: Broken wire? Didn't see that...so you know why they dont come on normally?
