Engine Caught Fire....Questions?
A customers engine caught fire and I've got a few questions to those who have dealt with this. What all did you have to replace? I don't see why the engine would be damaged but have any of you heard of the engine itself being damaged from fire? I'm just trying to get a run down on all the parts we'll need to fix the problem. He's doing an upgraded twin T04S kit so he won't need everything.
Anyways thanks for the help if I'm givin any

usually the engine is fine, its everything on top of it thats bad, like a bmw. it depends on how long it burned, all the plastic will want to melt too (brake master etc)

I'd say main engine harness needs to be replaces along with the omp lines and maybe fuel injectors since they have Orings and plastic.
How bad a fire we talking? Did it cover the entire engine bay and blaze for 5 minutes or just a small flare up for a few seconds. Where was it at?
I'd be mostly worried about the wires cause they can seem to be fine now but cause problems down the road that are VERY hard to trace
Also, just so that people know, can you tell us what started the fire so that it wont happen to us?
Doubt any of that helps, but maybe I metioned something you didnt already think of.

I've fixed a few. Like others said it really depends on how long it burned for.
Engine harness, fuel lines, oil metering lines, etc.
Leaking primary injectors are a common leak point. They are a little hard to diagnose, usually you think FPD, o-ring or fuel line instead.
The engine is usually fine unless the car really cooked. If it is bad then you'll probably have to redo the entire front of the car anyway. Sorta like that car on beyondtheredline.com

I'm currently in the process of rebuilding an engine fire for somebody and it's not pretty. Depending on how long it sits afterwards, everything gets corroded. Everything on top should be rebuilt/replaced. Things like brake lines, etc. should be checked as well because any concentrated heat on the lines can damage/weaken lines and/or damage the fluid inside. It sounds like you might have it a little easier switching to a single turbo, however everything needs to be cleaned up to be reusable. Buying another set of manifolds might be cheaper than the labor of cleaning them up. Don't forget there will probably be surprises along the way. And the engine is probably fine.

I had the engine fire...mine was cleary cause by the exact same thing mazda made a factory recall for!! the two rubber fuel lines connecting to the primary and secondary rail get heat cycled and finally crack then spray fuel all over your hot engine then the molten plastic fuels the fire....the good thing is as soon as it happens usually you lose fuel pressure and your engine shuts down....THE ENGINE WAS FINE, but I had to replace the upper intake manifold..oil metering lines...main engine harness...all four injectors...the fuel rail...the RATS NEST!!!....numerous sensors....and of course the FUEL LINES!!!! Things I have learned is that I will be changing the fuel lines out on a 40 to 50 k miles basis in the future...I all bought a thick fiber glass with a foil kind of stuff to wrap the fuel lines..super cheap insurance I think...plus much better than the factory recall...I have also consitered a small halon fire supression system to protect future engine harnesses!!
