Question emissions and power

i'm wondering what i can do and still be able to pass emissions here (Maryland). you can't just slip the guy some bills 'cause you can only get tested at a state run facility. i wanna do something rediculous... maybe... i'm actually considdering running a T78 eventually (or maybe even a T88). i know that i have to up the injectors and such... what can i change and still pass emissions? i have to keep the air pump and put a high flow on i know that, but what else am i missing here? if i change the fuel rails will that fail me? any advice would be greatly appreciated. i'm working on this and it'll be a while before and decisions are set in stone but, oh well. thanks guys.

Well, it's a pain in the ***, but you could keep your stock downpipe, cat w/air pump, and muffler. When it's time for inspection, put on the aforementioned stock parts. When you get your sticker, go home and switch it back. I think that even with a T-78, those parts would eliminate the foul emmisions. Another idea is to go to a junkyard or pick-and-pull and find some relatively new cars with decent cats. Buy like 5 cats and put them in series (one after another). That would be your special "emissions passing" cat-back. It would be easy for a muffler shop to weld them to your existing stock cat-back. The last alternative is to get a P.O. Box in a surrounding county that doesn't have emmisions inspections and register your car with that address. Learned that from an old school muscle car guy.

What are your mods now? A DP and a high flow cat with some denatured alcohol should get you through fine...

Rich, to run a T78 you have to remove your air pump. It won't allow the turbo to fit with it there. So, there is no way you'll pass and you'll have to find a way to skirt the corrupt system that makes no sense.

A few sports cars can't have no cats/no air pump....but yet we can have convoys of dump trucks and 18 wheelers that blow black **** all over the place 100% of their lifespan

its not so much of what i have on now... i just passed so i'm not worried. the problem is, i want to go rediculous on my car. i'm looking at dp, hi-flow cat, cat back, 3 row FMIC, 1600cc secondaries and a new fuel rail, 850cc primaries, and probably a TO4R, T51-R, T78, T88, or the GT35/40 kit rx7store is selling. i don't know if i'll go to a street port or not... again, emissions worries. i'm wondering if there is any chance in hell that i'll pass emissions like that.

*edit: i kinda figured i'd have to ditch it Bob, i'm just searching around looking for a way to spend cash. i guess i'm pretty much screwed into keep a tiny turbo or the stockers then... damn emissions. how old does the car have to be before it doesn't have to do emissions in MD?*

Only classic cars get the exemption.

I thought you told me you weren't going for much power, just enough to have fun???????????

yeah... well... i thought that was what i was going for... and at the moment, i am just going for fun. i'm gonna build up the car around my twins. when my engine goes, i'm just getting the feeling it will throw an apex seal into my turbos and ruin them. i was planning on going single then... i'm not necessarily looking at the T78, just what came to mind when i typed that. i really like the TO4R kits (fast spool and lots of flow) but i figure, if i'm already spending $3200, why not just go big with a 78 or even an 88 for a few hundred more? i don't plan on running much more than 15psi, just want the air flow to get some big *** numbers. are there any smaller singles out there that you recommend? i kinda would rather have a fast spool anyways. i'm not really sure what will end up doing, its all down the road a few years (3-4) but i'm just trying to get all the research done that i can.

for the time being though, you're absolutely right, i'm only looking for about 12psi on the stockers and lots of fun (plan on upgrading the fuel system, getting an FMIC and etc as said above, just so i have the room for continue expansion if i feel like doing it eventually)

I'm going to look into demetrios's R85 kit. Right now that is my kit of choice and will make plenty of power, it is also cheaper than most of the big name kits out there.

when you say plenty of power... what do you mean? any idea on how soon it spools? will you be able to keep the air pump on with it?

Only kit you can keep the air pump with is a small HKS kit, can't remember which one.

You can pass in Maryland with:

No EGR
No factory airpump - used ghetto-rigged electric one instead
Main cat
downpipe
single turbo T04S
street port
No Air control valve
15% denatured alcohol in the tank with 93 gas
GOOD TUNING (15:1 AFR in region of testing)

The KEY is the tuning and the alcohol.
