ON emissions bull shi....?

hi there

bought an fd a couple weeks ago , came with an expired emissions paper and safety , both passed previous years . took it in to have it done again and of course FAILED emissions .. safety passed.

however it did pass the curb idle but failed the drive portion , my HC ppm (limit 60) i was 107 as well the NO ppm (limit 450) i was 497.

i thought all the car needed was just a bit of a tune up , only has 71xxxkm even an auto tranny and everything runs and looks fine. i put new spark plugs in, air filter , fuel filter , new gas, and did an oil change . my Cat and O2 sensors are working perfectly fine.

took it back the other day to get re E tested and still failed even got the mechanic to so slow the timing down and tinker with a few things to get it running with less power and still nothing.

is there anymore i can do here without having to go and get a fake E test . i want the car to run right and it seems to be just not to the standards of stupid ontario

and i thought california was strict... that is almost unrealistic.

if superheating the cat fails to impress the dyno then perhaps just pay for it, smog standards are going beyond the ability of these cars to pass, usually on purpose to get them off the road. the cat could simply be tired and need to be replaced as those figures aren't that far off.

How do you know the O2 sensor is working properly? How many miles on it? I would replace it and try again.

A properly running FD should have significantly lower numbers and pass easily. Here are mine from a few years ago (downpipe, stock cat with unknown miles, RB exhaust, 55k mile engine):

Test________CO2%__O2%______HC(PPM)________CO%_____ ____NO(PPM)______
______RPM_MEAS__MEAS__MAX_AVE_MEAS__MAX__AVE__MEAS _MAX__AVE__MEAS

In the spring my car fail twice, until my guy took the the car out for 140 km 1/2 drive on the Highway. And then it passed just barely. The joys of leaving in Ontario!

Yeah they can pour smoke stacks worth of crap into the air from mass producing a bajillion "green" cars, but don't let that damn rotary gas hog be 2 parts per million over.

Funny.

Disconnect the fuel vapor purge solenoid, have the tank only about 5 gallons full and then add two gallons of E85.

i was going to give tips also but i hate the idea of alcohol in the fuel system. i did have one car that reacted very poorly to ethanol dilluted fuel which had to have the injectors serviced afterwards. i'd only suggest it if there is no other way to smog the car.

I had pretty much the same problems that you had. fuel Filters, air filter, plugs, oil change took the car back nice and hot and still failed horribly. I replaced the cats and now it has better smog number than any of my cars.

ya i havent taken the car back yet for a second test , i did however buy a new cat but after looking up something on the NO ppm found that the cat is working , the numbers would have been crazy high if it wasnt working.

richard^^^ made a good point when i spoke with him , since the person before me replaced all the vacuum lines and there is a good chance that he installed them wrong , i just havent had time to look up all the vacuum lines and take everything apart.

the purge solenoid is to the passenger side of the oil filler neck on the engine.

E85 is a hybrid fuel found at some filling stations, 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline blended.

well, worst case you can find denatured alcohol in most hardware stores which is pure ethanol. it runs cleaner and leaner than pump gas so you are tricking the smog machine into passing the car.

I had mine passed under hotrod standards after i failed regular testing twice. When i went for hotrod testing i ran denatured alcohol on a near empty tank. It passed under regular standards but was given the hotrod etest label.

and be sure to drive it conservatively if you run alcohol in the tank until you top it off, otherwise BOOM! new motor.
