electric water pump?

hey has anyone ever ran a electric water pump on their FD? i ask because on kg parts he sells a plate for two a/n fittings to run no water pump has anyone ever done this i would think it would get rid of the high rpm water problem and it would also cool the car better because you can wire it to a boost controller and let that run for a few min. after you turn your car off.

yes a few. search for it. glass man and pomanferrari and carlos (forget his handle) are using them in different setups.

That would be Carlos Iglesias, who's been an innovator in the RX-7 community for years. There are some nice photos and descriptions of his electric water pump in this thread somewhere.

scotty great thread, isnt 201f really freaking hot? i dont see much higher that 170f on a hot *** day. im used to C* but my comander is no longer in service so i had to switch to a autometer water temp thats reading 170F can anyone confirm whats the hot side in F?

201 isn't that hot, on a stock FD the rad fans don't turn on until 221 or 226 I forget which. Anyway, 170 is actually too cold, I personally don't like seeing anything below 180.

they come on at 221, if you have the thermoswitch they come on at around 210 - 211 and drop real fast back to around 170 - 190 range. I found this to be normal operating temps for mine. In the thread I believe he was on the track, I would consider 221 to be pretty good, I could be wrong. No experience with tracked FD's. someone else know better.

201F (91C) is a very safe coolant temperature.


Pure water at atmospheric pressure boils at 212F (100C).
Pure water at 13psi (0.9bar) boils at 243F (117C). This is the standard pressure cap for many 3rd Gens after the cooling recall.
Pure water at 16psi (1.1bar) boils at 250F (121C).
Pure water at 19psi (1.3bar) boils at 256F (124C). This was the original pressure cap for the '93 RX-7s before the recall.
Pure water at 30psi (2.0bar) boils at 273F (133C). This is what Carlos Iglesias is using on his car. Many race cars use even higher pressures: I've heard that F1 teams run their coolant at 50 psi or higher (boiling point over 290F).


Remember, these numbers are for pure water; a 70/30 mix of water/ethylene glycol (standard yellow-green coolant) will raise the boiling point by about 8 F, and a 50/50 mix will raise the boiling point by about 13F.

ok im running straight evans coolant with constant fans and no thermostat.... texas heat killed two of my motors..... anyway should i install a thermo? whats wrong with running too cold?

Increased wear due to engine metals have not expanded to their designed working dimensions

Reduced combustion efficiency, a motor is designed for a more efficient working temperature

Possibly reduced oil lubrication or increased oil drag due to higher viscosity (not sure)

yeah i compinsated the oil already, running thinner oil, as for the metal.... thats a good point, but the fans take the temp down to 170 when they turn on, i got the temp up to 185 today running it on the freeway, this was a little past the speed limit though..... just kinda hurt when i looked back down at the gas gauge

You are running your car too cold...put a t-stat back in! You are not helping your car. The cooling capabilities of the system are not being increased, all you are doing is greatly extending warm-up and preventing the motor from running in the ideal temp range.

the only reason i had it set up this way was because i have gone through 3 coolant o-rings due to overheating... so i did the t-stat evans coolant and fluidine to compinsate but i'll throw in a tstat and that will fix that problem

They have a water pump/block adapter.
Carlos and I are running Davies Craig EWP's and controllers. I'm thinking about getting a group buy going for them if anyone is interested.

the_glass_man , can you go into more detail about your setup? Which coolant and radiator are you using, what pressure cap, and do you have an AST?
