EGR vacuum line

so i was installing custom boost controllers and i found that my vacuum lines had all
been changed from the previous owner (i just got the car in june) and that the egr
line was not replaced. im going to put a vacuum line back on it. but what does this
do exactly? i know its the exhaust gay recirculation solenoid. is it super necessary?
and would have it done any damage not being attached?
im still a noob at the sequential system.
