AZ ECU is getting power without key...

Hi,

Had something strange happen tonight. I was running a connector to a new gauge I was getting ready to installing and while I was fishing the wiring to the center speaker location with a coat hanger, power came on to a few accessories. After a few minutes power would come on and off intermittently but now it is on all the time, without a key in the ignition. I did not have the battery disconnected because I was not planning to do any wiring, I was simply getting everything ready.

It seems that power is really low as lighting seems to be fate and the ignition key chime is really low and sounds like it is going to die. Once I put the key in the ignition and click to the on position, everything powers up normally.

I pulled the gauge hood and AC panel and looked for anything the coat hanger might of touched or any exposed bare wire but can't see anything out of the ordinary.

I'm really stumped and any suggestions would be appreciated.

Weird. I would guess that someone has done some "wiring work" to the car in the past, and not done a very good job of it. There may be a loose wire or some connection twisted together with electrical tape over it (ugh) but you should find the cause and not leave it. Nothing worse than an electrical fire or getting a call from the fire dept while at work

Also, maybe keep the battery.disconnected while you're away from the car. It sounds a lot like a constant 12V source is bridging across to the ignition switched 12V feed and making it live. Check firewall grommets and and follow the loom to any pressure points or pinch points and check for no rubbing or insulation damage... Good luck!!

Thanks. I did isolate it to the fuse marked Meter from the drivers side fuse box under the dash. I am guessing this is for the gauge cluster but I am not sure what else is connected to this fuse. I had already pulled the gauge cluster and all of the wiring looks factory. I also removed all of the old aftermarket wiring that the previous owner did for the gauges I am replacing. Hopefully when I get more time I will actually determine the source.
