Is this ECU chipped?
Hi,
before I start, I will just fill you in on the background story.
I just bought this JDM FD. It has a catback, JDM 2.5" DP,HKS intake, Greddy boost and EGT gauges, Mazdaspeed suspension, Mazdaspeed 15th anniversary wing . Everything else seemed stock.
When test driving it I noticed a .7- .5- .9 kg/cm boost pattern. I pushed it quite hard and guessed that it should be ok if the owner was driving it for a while like that.
Anyway, because the boost is above standard levels, I have been more and more worried that the fuel or intake temps(stock ic) are not good and I blow the engine. It must be noted that I have been driving it around quite a bit and it pulls hard and drives well.
Today I decided to check the ecu, hoping to find a sticker or something that indicated that it was an uprated ecu or something like that. Instead i found a Knight Sports FCD. I was not happy as I have tried a HKS FCD on my old FD and blown an engine bacause of the damned thing. (Inexperience, stupidity... I know, I know)
The ECU looks stock, except fot some writing on it. I can't believe the old owner would have had those mods, plus high boost, small IC etc and no extra fuelling. Getting desparate, I took out the ECU and decided to look inside.
This is what I noticed. The sticker on the outside had a serial number, and the chip I am pointing to has a different serial number. Is this the chip that is changed when people do the ecu upgrade?
Either way, I am going to get it on the dyno and check out the AFRs. But if it is definitely not a chipped ecu, I think I will have to be very lightfooted until I buy a PFC.
Anyway, the pics are attached, and I threw one in of the car just for fun. I just painted the car myself so I put in a before and after. I will post my painting adventure on another thread when I get time!
Thanks
Trevor

Here is the other board. There are only 2 boards, I have seen one of my friend's ecu with 3 boards. I think that may be the daughter board setup with plug in rom.
Can't see any chips of that size though!

Yep, that totally looks like a stock ECU. Every ECU I've seen that's chipped has the daugherboard, and every JDM chipped ECU I've seen has some sort of sticker on it and sometimes tamper-proof tape to make sure you don't take it apart.
Here's a good example of a chipped Japanese ECU -

Notice all the stickers. Many of them also have labels showing what it's tuned for. Japanese are really big on packaging, and you'd be hard-pressed to find a Japanese shop that doesn't put at least a logo sticker on the ECU.

The colour is RX8 Winning blue. If there was a House of Kolor n the UK I would have gone for their kandy blue but this one is still nice. Lots of metallic in the mix!

About the ECU, looks like my car could be a timebomb with such high boost and no extra fuel. I will def be easing off the gas when I drive from now. Thats really hard to do cos it's such fun driving the FD.!

Actually, now when I look at the attached Pettit ECU, it looks like the bottom chip has been changed, the same as the one I suspect has been changed on mine.
Does anyone know which data is held on which chips? Perhaps the fuel map is on one and the ignition timing and boost/boost cut off is on the other.
If so, it could be that mine has a richer fuel map, but standard timing and boost/ boost cut off. That might explain why there is and FCD fitted? Just a thought...
