It's an R2 best I can tell. The seats appear to be the "suede leather" that came standard in the R1/R2's. They technically aren't suede, but thats what everyone calls them. If you look in the engine bay picture. Cruise Control would be mounted in the top right... it isn't there. Has the R2 lip, spoiler, front strut bar... can't tell if it has the rear... and can't see if it has dual oil coolers. Looks like an R2 to me

Here is the carfax. Looks like a nice car, but only being driven 300 miles in a few years can be bad juju on the engine.

No **** Sherlock. Base's, PEP's & PEG's didn't come with R1 lips & rear spoilers.

The dealer or owner could add or remove anything.

IMO the true way to verify a R1/R2 (besides the obvious dual oil coolers) is to look for the dedicated brake ducts behind the spoiler lip. Anyone can add the lip, but few will go the extra mile & install the ducts.

I was bummed out he didn't reply (& it wasn't posted) to my question about what scent air freshener he installed.

How many oil coolers and the location? Production date and location of production please? If it is an R2 this should be easy.

What the hell are you talking about? The guy that posted this thread said that Cruise Control was listed as one of the options in the options list in the ebay ad. Because of this, he was questioning whether or not it was an R2. As I had already stated in the thread, based on the engine bay picture, the car does not have cruise control... and was not an option for the R1/R2 from the factory. Could a dealer added it on? Yes, but I highly doubt it. I never said that other cars didn't come with any of the other stuff... but all R1/R2's did. I guess whatever you have to do to make yourself feel better.

This car is a steal! Aside from the new air freshener that someone already pointed out... it has:

1. a fire extinguisher (professionally mounted by tossing it in a rear bin)
2. an OIL FILTER (which I assume is a rare option, as the buyer made a point to take a picture of it)!

Another way to tell is the manufacturer sticker inside the drivers door. It shows date of build and also it will say HARD suspension for R models and SOFT for others. Of course, someone could change those too I suppose

It also appears to be missing the rear wiper, to my knowledge only the Base and R1/R2s didn't have a rear wiper and it's not exactly an option a dealer can delete.

Mazda lets you look up vehicles by the VIN at their website. According to MAZDA, it IS an R2. You can verify this by logging in as an 'owner' (you do need to register) & enter the VIN as your auto.

The great mystery is SOLVED!

Soft?!! That sounds rather un-manly. Actually, on the sticker in the passenger side door jamb under Suspension is says : STD S. for the Base, Touring, and Popular Equipment package cars.
