Smile Easy flooded engine starting

Wow.....I just found a side benefit of the remote starter button I put on my car.
Last night I was stupid, just pulled my car in from the drive to the garage. And of course this morning it was flooded to HELL, wouldn't even think about starting.
Since I was late I just took the Volvo to work. Came home tonight, and thought about this: The starter button turns the engine over without energizing the fuel pump. So I just held the button in with the key off for about 15 seconds, turned the key on and cranked for another 10 seconds or so, the car hit and missed, so I repeated the procedure and voila! She started up smoking and coughing and belching, but she started....and MUCH easier than normal for a totally flooded engine like it was. Believe me I have fought it to where I drained the battery...TWICE....trying to get it to fire.

Anyways, it worked really nicely. Thought I'd share.

Interesting method, I might have to look into that. Now do a write up on how you installed your remote start and which one you used.

Hmm... I haven't had any flooding issues yet. And sometimes I just fire her up and move it into garage (10-20secs of running time). Then it sits over the week and fires right up on friday when I get home. Am I lucky or are euro FDs friendlier in this respect ?

You may just be lucky.

My FD doesn't flood like my FC did, but it has done it, like 4 times in 3 years now. And each time it has been after starting the car cold and moving running it for just a few seconds and then shutting it off again.
This was the exact thing that would just ensure my FC would flood.
And yeah, I never really have too much trouble getting unflooded, usually I just cycle thru holding the gas pedal to the floor and cranking, then no gas at all and cranking, repeat until it starts...but sometimes I've drained the battery doing this.

I'll put together a little write up on my push button install.

Look at this link for flooded starting instructions. It also explains why the 13b floods. The remote starter button sounds great.

My turboII used to flood all the time due to leaky injectors. At first I could usually start it by stomping on the throttle and cranking her until she started, but then it got to the point where this didn't work anymore. I got the fuel pressure bleed off thing from Mazda trix and this significantly reduced the occurances of flooding, but it still happened some times. Then I installed a switch on the fuel pump power line. When it was flooded I would just turn the switch off, crank it until you could feel it starting and then turn the switch back on, and she would run. This worked every time. So far my 3 has only flooded once or twice, and I haven't needed the switch. The switch is also a good backup anti-theft measure as well. Even against car jacking, you can flip the switch, get out and it will run for 10 sec or so before dying. Hope this helps someone.

quick and easy way to start a flooded rx7 if it's a manual shift

If you aren't familiar with being towed, get help from someone who is. The most important things to know are; the towing vehicle provides the power to go, the towed vehicle provides the brakes to stop. Set up a hand and /or horn signal communication.

Top speed was about 10 to 15 mph, car in 3rd gear, key in position so that steering was available but NO power to the ignition system (no fuel pump), towed about 100 feet with the clutch pedal out (engine turning over), throttle wide open to clear all the fuel (you will feel the compression building as the fuel clears and the oil pump gets oil to the apex seals), after you feel compression, take your foot off the accelerator and turn on the key, in another 100 to 200 feet you should start to feel the engine catch and you have to be good with the clutch here as if it catches, you might get a slack tow rope so you have to have some talent and good communication with the tow vehicle. If the tow rope goes slack, try to keep it that way until the towing vehicle stops.

I had tried the other methods and they didn't work for me; with this one I had the car running in 5 minutes or less. The car will run crappy for several minutes until it gets warmed up.

I will never shut it off cold again unless it's an emergency.
