I did a search and didnt find anything so here is my question! Ive been wondering about this for a while now.

The FC rx7s come with dual rear piping for the exhaust! Why didnt the FD come with that! It seems that the design on the rear bumper was designed to have dual pipes/exhaust but MAZDA only put 1.

Is there a reason for this? Can we just swap from FC model or does anybody make customer piping to fit a dual exhaust n the rear.

To me it would just be nicer to the eye to see 2 exhaust pipes coming out of the rear instead of one.

Please someone gve me some info on this?

Having 2 exhausts would be heavier; weight was one of the most important things to the designers, so it had to go.

 

the fuel tank is in the way on the left side.

 

It would just look so nice. Im pretty sure that there is alluminum exhausts that can balance the weight and as fasr as the tank being in the way. There is nothing impossible if you have the means to customize your vehicle.

It just looks uneven to me, the rear bumper has 2 inlets and only one side is utilized for an exhaust. It just seems like is missing the other side

 

I agree, i just bought a rb dual tip and when i look at it from a distance it just didnt seem right. I would rather have a exhaust on each side or have a quad exhaust. IMO it just looks better and makes it look more like a sports car. I wish some company would figure a way to do this.

 

besides does anyone know if there would be performance advantages since im assuming that there will be more flow and less restriction.

Has anyone tried this? will it affect the power gain or torque ??

I don't think that it would create any better flow because you have to think what size the exhaust is coming from the turbo manifold. Also, just so that you know, one 3" pipe flows more than two 2 1/4" in pipes so there is no need for 2 pipes on an 3rd Gen RX-7. The last drawback would definately be the weight of the two exhausts.

That being said I think that duals look fantastic and although they aren't functional they give it a great ***!

 

GM figured out how to do it -- they have been putting fake dual exhausts (only one flows any exhaust) for years. I don't know if they were the first, but it's really a lousy way to do it if you ask me. I think some Mitsu 3000 cars have had "fake" duals also.

As others have pointed out, the story is that the FD got single exhaust for weight reasons. It makes sense -- you can definitely get better flow for the weight with one muffler and piping rather than two. And since the turbos are there (with a shared manifold), there is no chance for a performance advantage of keeping the pipes separate.

I do understand the attraction to aesthetics of duals, but frankly it just doesn't make sense for this car from a technical perspective. The factory did the right thing with the single exhaust (and big gas tank ).

What would be the point of that? You are still restricted before the split off, so it wouldn't really help flow, and like other people said, it would just be heavy. Nothing but cosmetics. Just doesn't look right IMO.

 

I work at a chevy dealership and I've been asked by my "red-neck" co-workers why dont you put dual exhaust on your RX-7? I told them the same thing. One 3" flows good enough.

 

I have the rb duals and think it looks great...No need for extra weight just for the sake of looking sportier...How can you get any more "sprots car looking" then the FD anyway (even in it's stock form)?

 

The Saleen S7 is more sporty looking IMO. Dual exhaust is meant for making the car quieter, and works good when its a true dual (I.E. V8's have exhaust coming off each side of the engine)

 

You guys are all talking about weight ...then why in the world the new RX8 has dual tips???

 

I'm guessing with that first rx7 up there with dual tips...I would say it has a fuel cell in the trunk and no gas tank under the spare. Just my guess

What does the design and focus of the 8, have to do with the FD RX-7?

There are a few FDs around with REAL dual exhaust. The Abflug car is one.



I believe all of them removed the fuel tank and used a fuel cell in the trunk to make it work.

 

THe RX8 was only meant to bring back the rotary. Check out the curb weight to the 3rd gen and the curb weight of the RX8

Havent you guys noticed that by now! I have modified the images digitally to get the effect and to give you guys an idea of what it would look like! You like my skills ?


But the point of this thread was to find out if there was any mechanical advantages. It will certainly make the car look nicer! but i wanted to find out he advantages all around ! Looks and performance comparing it to the rx-8 and the fc models with dual exhaust

 

I remember this topic came up a while ago, and somebody had photoshopped dual RB dual tips onto an FD. It did look badass, but has already been pointed out in this thread, you would either need a custom designed fuel tank or a fuel cell to route the exhaust piping.
