"Driving" a 5-speed FD

OK guys, please bear with me here, I don't mean for this to come out as dumb as it sounds...

Alright, I have had my FD for about 1 month now, have done some reliability mods and am ready to drive it more often now. Now, I use to work at a dealership before I went on to college so I have driven many cars(briefly though). All my personal vehicles have been auto's though. This just wasn't fitting though fo rthe FD purchase

Here's the question....I know how to drive a 5-speed (so please don't give me a line about buying over my head), but I am interested in learning more on how to "drive" a 5-speed considering this is a more high performance vehicle. My worry is basically in the RPMs and appropriate gears. For instance, on expressways when I am cruising at 65-80 and in 5th gear, if I want to downshift for some serious passing power what gear is best? Down to 4th? That is what I usually do and it is responsive, but I am wondering if 3rd is more appropriate?

Basically, I baby this car and driving (which isn't necessarily a bad thing, I don't want a mishap), but I know I can learn to push and utilize the manual tranny better. Any help you guys can give on the gearing and appropriate shift points would be helpful. (let the jokes begin )

So let me make sure I have this straight.

Example: If I am in 5th and going 80 I will be at approx. 3200RPM, then I down shift to 4th, I will then be at approx. 4400RPM.

Alright, any cruising speed above 60MPH I should only downshift to 4th?

4400rpm should be plenty powerfull enough if you car is healthy. so yes, imo. just "blip" the throttle before you let out the clutch on 4th so that the rpm's are somewhere near the speed they need to be when you engage the clutch, hence "rev matching".

I normally shift between 2800 and 4000 when I'm just cruising.

In my opinion, as long as you're below redline, your ok. Obviously keep an eye on vitals like oil pressure, coolant temp, etc., but as long as those look ok, just kepe it below redline, and all should be fine.

well, If I want to REALLY push the car from say cruising at 75mph in 5th...revmatch and drop it into third, hold till 90mph....

www.turnfast.com

has a good section on shifting/revmatching

for simply passing, 4th'll do you fine. 5th should be fine to pass as well if your turbos are boosting normally.
