Drivers Side Power Window Won't Work, Help Please

Hey Guys,

My driver's side power windows stopped working about 2 weeks ago for my 93 FD. The passenger's side window works, and I've noticed that the control switch which turns the passenger's side switch on and off works (the on/off switch at the base of the driver's side switch which can take away the control of the passenger's side window switch).

I checked the fuses by the drive pedals and all of those fuses are fine, I just bought a new driver's side power window switch and that doesn't work either, but the passenger's side control mechanism still works just like the old switch. I pulled out the paneling from the door and took a look for broken wires and couldn't find any broken or damaged wires.

One thing I also noticed in the last day or 2 when it was raining at night if I used the driver's side switch, it would work for a second, and then not work at all any more (so it didn't work for the first week, then it seemed to work when it rained but sounded like it was straining, then didn't work at all).

I am pretty sure it's not the window motors because the passenger's side window does not work from the driver's side but will work using the passengers side switch and you can heard the motor is still strong.

Anyone have any idea what is going on here or even what to check?? I'm completely lost here.

Check out the door harness. You may not see cut wires or pinched ones but this could be the problem.

ok, pulled off the door panel again, all the wires looked ok, and checked the wires between the window switch and the wires leading to the driver's side window motor, and the wires are showing a signal so the wires aren't damaged. took a look at the door harnes, it looked ok. not a single clue what's goin on here.

Just looking at it won't give you a clue to what's wrong. Perform an electrical test of the harness. Or, if you have an extra or have a friend that has one, try it out. I'm almost sure this is the problem, had the same thing happen to me a few years ago.

The connections in the door (where the wires go from the door to the body) will sometimes corrde up and need a good cleaning. Take a look there .

hey guys, thanks for all of the info, just wanted to give an update as to what I found an what I did.

unplugged the door harness from the dash harness (the connection at the door), and turns out you guys were right, the harness connectors had corroded, some of the connections had looked like it had exploded green, there was no connector left between the 2 terminals, one of the wires had actually corroded about a half inch into the wire itself (the wire was hanging off detached from the harness, when I cut the wire about 1/8" up, it was still corroded to the point where it was green powder).

I checked with the dealer and got a price quote. They said the connectors for the harnesses only came with the harness, not by itself. Since the door and dash harness side of the connectors were corroded, I would have needed both. The price quote I got:

$500 for the door harness
$1600 for the dash harness
$1200 labor to install

I pretty much said screw that. So what I did was pop the door off, cut the wire harness connectors off, and hard wire spliced the wires together with spade connectors and wrapped each with electrical tape. The way I looked at it, since the olny other alternative to that was to get new harnesses, since I was cutting into the harnesses themselves, even if time came along and I had to replace the harnesses, it would eventually eliminate the splicing I did.

So after about 8 hours splicing the wires and wrapping everything down, everything works again now, actually window motors actually seem stronger than before believe it or not (guess I've always had the corrosion since I had the car and it just got worse over time).

Thanks for all of the help guys, it really was a great help.

That exact thing happened to me. Sorry I'm no se to this thread now, but I just read it and was about to post exactly what your last post reads. Congats! That's a real pain in the *** I know!
But on the bright side, this thread will more than likely help someone else out with this problem when they search for... Driver Side Window.

yeah, that's what I figured, most of the time if I can't find something I usually try and add what I did to fix it cause there's gotta be someone out there that had or will have the same problem. definately was a pain though, definately don't want to do that again, ever. thanks for the comments though dude, much appreciated.
