The original poster pried a bit too harsh on the metal ring. It doesn't require much pressure or tab deformation, just finesse.
I got my "grain of wheat" bulb from a local model train store, works great, dirt cheap.

Thanks for the prop! Right about the retaining ring, you just have to gently work it off. I found that using 2 small flat head screwdrivers works well.
