holy crap, stop yanking it! just open it and take off the door cover from the inside and spray it with wd-40 (a lot all over inside thru the holes in the door) that should loosen things up a lot

Yep, just order a new one (around $130):

Malloy Mazda
1-888-533-3400
Talk to Ray Crowe

It's pretty easy to replace. Just pull the plastic piece covering the back of it from inside the door. Then, there are 2 bolts exposed (10mm I think). Remove those and the outside handle will be lose.

Pop the little plastic holders off the rods and then you can get access to removing the actual lock. Place the lock into the new handle, mount and attact the rods and you are pretty much done.

I have a '93 Touring that I'm parting out and still have both door handles that work perfectly if you would like to save yourself some money and buy them off of my car. If you're interested PM BanzaiToyota as he is in charge of parting my baby out while I'm overseas. Hope that helps some. Laterz.

BEFORE you buy a new one (or while you're waiting for the new one to arrive) you need to try some white lithium in the spray can. Shoot it into that sticky lock where the key goes in, and shoot everything on the back. Don't use WD-40 - it will work, but it won't last.

Lithium grease = $5 and easy to find.

White lithium grease is what he's talking about and he's right. It also works great on sunroof tracks when they start to stick. Good call Dave.

Yes, but it's only a temporary fix. The handle will break eventually (just ask me how I know). May as well fix it right the first time which is what I should have done.

My understanding was that an unlubricated handle mechanism sees lots more friction. Symptom = hard to close/open. Result: much greater stresses and broken parts.

Are there some wearing components in this assy I'm not aware of? Or parts that fail eventually no matter what?

Mine just completely broke. After two applications of grease, one day it just snapped (lasted about 3 months). It sucked having to open the driver's side door from the passenger side.

If he's already yanked hard on it a few times, chances are some damage has already been done.

And those handles are FAR from a strong part when it comes to abuse. I have been through a set on my old FD as well. The ones that I'm parting out aren't that old and I know they both work GREAT!!

Any and all parts prices or info needs to be routed through BanzaiToyota. He's in charge of parting out my baby while I'm overseas for the next 15 months. Just PM him and he'll sort you out. Laterz.
