i personally like to drift...........but doing that is dangerous...........you WILL hit something

and drifting around corners is slower than gripping it, but it is more fun

i dont go to the track, but i have friends that do.......they tell me the car grips to the road like its glue.........but in the rain its a different story

the fd is rather an expinsive car to practice drifting in, which is what it seems like u will be doing , otherwise u woudl not be askign this quastion. what di du buy teh car for? drifting is almost always slower then using teh tires to its limit of traction. on very small tight turns u might find that very little drfiting coudl be faster going around the turn.

If a turn is tighter than your turning radius, drifting can help.

i think some of you watch way too much of those japanese drifting videos from japan......safe drifting would be on a track, not on a public road

It depends on if you want to go fast, or show off to your Initial D-watching friends.

Want to show off, drift.

Want to go fast, don't.

there are ways to drift that are fast. there are also types of corners that are faster drifting than gripping.

7sweetie is right. I hate when people tell other people how to drive on public roads but drifting is a different story. I totaled my car drifting on public roads. All Im trying to say be sure you know what your doing before drifting on public road. Once you learn how, go for it. Just dont go all out like I did and drift around yield turns. Ohh yea, i was hardcore

I think it is cool to see drifting, but I don't try to do it when I go to the track. No one drifts at track events around here -- everyone is too busy trying to go fast. And I don't think the event organizers would like it if you started drifting.

Well, that would be dirt or gravel, which would be the only types I can see. Dirt and gravel are interesting because they are loose surfaces, and trying to not slide is futile, because the ground keeps rolling away. You can generate higher accelerative forces by kicking the car sideways and digging at the ground with the tires.

This is not true for ice, dry pavement, or wet pavement. In these cases the road doesn't move around, and you can't "dig" at it, so the faster way is the old tried and true way.

Cars USED to be faster in big 4 wheel drifts. This is not "drifting" as the modern definition, because in a 4 wheel drift the car is not oversteering - both ends of the car are sliding equally. Old tires had a very long, soft traction curve, and peak traction was at a fairly high slip angle. Modern tires are not like this - they have a short sharp traction curve that peaks at a low slip angle.

In short, if you want slideways to be the fastest way around, drive on dirt, gravel, or old bias-ply tires.

Agreed. I know it's all about balance and car control like a ballet dance, but it makes you S-L-O-W. If I wanted to drift, I'd watch the "Dukes Of Hazzard" for lessons.

I have yet to see anyone in the US really drift as well as those guys in japan...

with that said, drifting is definitely slower than grip driving especially around the tracks here in the states where everything is generally really really high speed. Drifting eats up your tires really quick, it heat cycles them, and it also is not the fastest way to go around the track. It's cool to watch and good to show off, and it represents definite car control but it gets really expensive. You also need to set your car up to be able to drift well

Damn I thought I was hardcore when I did powerslides on public roads. Never thought about drifting though and I don't really see how you can drift on public roads without screwing up. maybe I need to find a good place to practice drifting

Drifting is like a circus, fun to watch but if not for the show it is really pointless.

Like everyone said, drifting isn't fast, don't do it on the street. I've got two words, Jeff Oner (do a search).

That said, I auto-x and practice keeping the tires planted at all times, practically no slippage at all.

I also practice "Turn One", empty wide industrial road by my work, leaving work in the rain I just tip the throttle in and hold it barely sideways to about 55mph. So fun, I don't really hang the tail WAY out like the real drifters do, but I have my fun.

Jeff

Do you nurse your tires? Making them last for 60, 70 or even 80k miles? If you do.....you suck horseballs !!! go drifting with them and mark your territories in the intersection..yo

well the witnessed said i was doing 80mph( doesnt sound like me but i guess i was)(I told the cop I was doing 30 mph) . I was making yeild turn trying to make it work on time and car got out of controll ,and I saw a old *** caty comming toward me and thats all I remember. I woke up 60 yards from the accident. I was right buy the tcby drive threw window. boy did I feel like a dumb ***. It wont happen agian. The only thing about drifting, is that if you wreck, Its very embarrasing. it make you look like you cant drive.

Remember its not if you crash, its when. For me it was about the 5th time I tried although I did not really sustain any real damage to my car (I got really lucky!!!)

To set your car up for drift just make it so that you oversteer such as front camber more neg, rear camber more pos. I also hear toe out also makes you whip around pretty quickly. good luck and buy extra bodyparts just in case...
