draining tranny oil?

I read somewhere that you are supposed to take out the fill plug before you take out the 2 lower drain plugs. Why is this? Just for venting?

Thanks

i thought it was to be sure that it comes off because if you drain it first and the fill plug doesnt come out then ur screwed..

Whether that's the real reason or not, it makes good sense. At least you'd be able to drive it somewhere and have the fill plug removed if need be.

If you do not take out the fill plug before you remove the drain plug, the oil will go everywhere except the pan below the hole.

There is only one plug used to drain the tranny.

Check this thread, was discussed in great detail with some examples of what can happen when you don't take the fill plug out. Was for the rear diff but same story.
