The downpipe from hell... (long)
In my opinion your vacuum readings are way low....which might be indicative of part of your problem.
Check your pressure/vacuum tanks for cracks or bad hoses to start, it just seems like you likely have a bad hose on the turbo pre-control system perhaps....
My DP install fixed completely the low boost at the top end problem that I had.....the car is soooooooo completely different when it runs right!
Good luck, keep asking questions and checking everything out, you'll get it fixed.

Thanks for your help guys. I definately agree that the vacuum is way too low. I obviously have a problem there. Hopefully, I'll get around to a hose job one of these days, and that will take care of the problem. Until then, I'll just live with a low idle (it wants to stall every once in a while too).
On the plus side, at least I can feel the turbos working! Oh yeah, I've checked it out a couple of times, and in third gear, I eventually boost up to 10 psi after transition, but it takes a while for it to creep up there. In first and second, I hit redline before the boost makes it back up to 10. Oh well, at least its running better than it was.

Picture Time!!!!
For those that are interested, here are some of the pictures of the festivities with my downpipe.
Even though this first one is a little dark, I still think its one of the best. Check out the name of the lift I was using...

heres me trying to re-thread the dang stud on the turbo housing. It was nearly impossible to get the die in there, and it could only be turned about a quarter turn at a time. Needless to say, it took a while.

Good story .. reminds me of all the little things I'll need to do in a few weeks when I do the same job ..
Apparently I have to do something with the steering as well with it being RHD ..
Just another little challenge to overcome .

God, good thing you had access to a lift!
Imagine how bad it would have been on your backs, with the fear of pulling the car off the jackstands as you pull on the wrench!
I hate exhuast work

Hey Rob,
I wouldn't worry too much about the transition being 6PSI. That is the same that I see up here at this altitude and it does seem to be a bit slower to build back up after transition, but it should still hit 10 PSI no problem so it sounds like there still may be a problem there.
Just PM me if you have any questions, since Nic hasn't driven his car in so long he probably doesn't remember what its supposed to feel like.
Are you gonna be able to make it up to IMI this weekend?

he just keeps trying to find more stuff wrong with it instead of actually getting in there and doing a damn hose job and testing things like I told him to do when he got the car....
It has been a LONG time since I drove my car and a longer time since I have driven an rx7 with stock sequentials.....but I know what it's supposed to feel like.
maybe this will work....
Rob, your car is a dog - do your damn hose job!

600rpm is too low an idle, no wonder your vacuum is so low. It should be 850rpm (and don't anyone tell me 750 I don't want to hear it...). What is causing this? Wish I knew, but most likely a vacuum leak somewhere.
okay, okay, okay. Enough of the bash on Rob time. evidently no one loves me, not even my car...
suganuma - first of all, stop BSing. You know as well as I do that I just haven't had the damn time to rip into it. I'll be working on it this weekend though. You're gonna help right? As for the pictures, I didn't really have any good ones of you ripping of that cat stud. I'll post a couple of you that I have, but be forewarned, they aren't very good (I gave you recognition in name, isn't that good enough?)
As for the slow comment:, all I have to say is that at least mine is running. Yours has been without a motor for...oh... about 5 months now?

Dr Wankel - I'm gonna try to make it up to IMI, but I'm not sure if I can. I have a lot of stuff to do this weekend, but I'll definately try.
Yeah, I'm positive theres a vacuum leak somewhere (maybe the vacuum check valve out of the UIM). Course, I'm also getting a code 44 which tells me I have a bad turbo control solenoid. I won't know until I get the time to get in there and start ripping things out

Told you they weren't very good. Here's a pic of you trying to dremel out the hole on the downpipe. We both thought that would work, but quickly found out that a dremel doesn't work to well on thick stainless, and it wouldn't have mattered because the stud was stripped and bent. Thats when we decided to just drill the dang stud out.
