door sill reburbish

i was considering sand blasting down he original door sills then laquering them etc. since there pretty knackered at the minute.

was wondering wether anyone had done this before, and wether or not its a safe option, are the standard sills stainless all the way through or are they just coated. obviously coated ones would not look good after a sand blasting

do not want to buy new ones as such, and think carbon fibre looks sh*t, specially on black

and i have searched and not found anything, personally think the search system on this website is rubbish to say the least

AFAIK, they are all aluminum but the RX7 is obviously is plated.
Personally I think the search function of this form is fine...to say the least. Since you posted this thread in the wrong section, I assume you didn't search in the interior/exterior section either. That might cut down on the rubbish searchs. They're pretty soft, thats why they tend to look beat-up over time. IMO sandblasting might make them look worse. Maybe why I've never heard of anyone trying it.
Maybe the mods will move this thread there too.

yeh thanks for the help i'll get used to the site eventually,

after doing a bit of research, i don't see the problem with sandblasting them just to get them down to the bare metal, then polish and coat with a thin layer of clear lacquer, and i'd imagine they would look great. maybe put something uderneath the door to stop them getting so messed up again

another option would be to chrome plate them depending on price

i would prefer to do it myself and spend less money an more time on it, will post pictures when i'm done!!

saw this old thread thought I would post for closure, did do this a while ago!

was really impressed with the end result! looks sick and cost me a grand total of about £5 for some ultra fine wire wool I didn't have, oh and about 8 hours :/

before

during

after

After about a year or two later they have dulled a bit but still look pretty good (I just use autosol on them every now and again, I did **** up painting the RX7 bit as it was a very smooth finish on it and I should have roughed it up a bit more; could do with doing again
