Door lock delima?

Has anyone ever fixed a broken lock on a third gen? I mean the actual lock mechanism that the key slides into. For some reason my key won't go in to the drivers side lock all the way, no matter what. I want to know if I can fix it somehow, I definately don't want to have to get all new locks. Has anyone ever had problems similar to this and fixed it? Thanx for any help.

Hey whats up carbon kid..First Ive seen some of your work n its quite nice I must say. I had the problem one night to where my key would fuly insert itself, It went in about 25%maybe..so i opened it through the pass. side. and drove home..the next day I took it to a mechanic and said that it just needed to be lubed up??...I was skeptical but it worked...But low n behold I had another problem. When i would try to open the door it wouldnt open the door. Turns out the handle wouldnt push the rods down far enough..I have a bit more info but i think it will go off your topic. Other than that let me know.

I lubed the **** out of my driver-side lock and it still broke keys. I eventually replaced the entire assembly. Well worth the money!!

I have few door lock mechanisms at home. I'll take some pics and post it on the forum. I believe you could interchange passenger side mechanism and move it to driverside. Also, when the small plastic door for the key breaks, small pieces gets stuck inside the key hole. And prohibits from going in.

Lube will help and you could pick up some key lubes at Home Depot. I used it on my house key and worked great.

If your handle is hard to pull, take the door handle assembly out and wd40 or re-lube the spring inside. It will make it easier to open your door.

By the way, Sonix7, you DO an OSSUM job on the CF stuff!!

Well my key goes in, and you can turn it, but it doesnt lock, or unlock the door on the driver side.

On the passenger side, someone put hot glue in it, so now its fucked up. and theres no way to get all the glue out.

The keyless entry is the only way i can lock and unlock my car.

So if the battery is dead, im fucked, not really, cause its happend before. I ended up having to crawl into the trunk and laying accross the strut bar and pushing the lock up manually.

thanx for all the nice compliments guys. I am trying to make the best carbon fiber stuff you or I can find. 99 lip? Pm me. I have something brewing. anyway about the key lock, yeah I am going to try and lube it up, I already lubed the handle mechanism and that worked awesome, I suggest lithium grease on there for long life lubrication. I am going to look at the interchangeable thing on the lock. The way the lock mounts might be an issue, but that would help out. So no one knows of getting a lock matched to a key right? cause I could order a new one and get it rekeyed so to speak. ?? anyone.

I had a similar problem so I just nutted up and took the entire lock out of the door and started in taking it apart. Once in there you see all the little tumblers that are actually coded and you can intuitively see how the different sizes match the shape of the key. Anyhow....I ended up taking two entire tumblers out. Now my door lock operates perfectly. Yes, I realize I "compromised" the integrity of the lock a little bit, but let's face it....a thief is not going to pick the friggin' door lock to steal the car!

I suggest you do as I did, just take the lock apart and put it back together minus a few parts.

The plastic guard on the cylinder may have disintigrated. You can remove the cylinder, take it to a locksmith, and have it cleaned and the plastic replaced for about $10.00

Yup, I fixed my light at the same time too (because I think that is just cool-*** thing!) and fixed the missing flapper by cutting out a piece of a coffee can plastic lid.

Not really, but if you look at the bottom of the rod where it meets the door mechanism there may be a gap in the rod that you can fill with something and this wil give you a little bit more pushing distance. I used a lego piece in the gap until I could fix it correctly. hahahaha

goodluck,

thanx scratch, but I fixed it. I took the lock mechanism apart like a few suggested, when I did I found that one of the key teeth was stuck and wasn't able to slide like its supposed to, because of being bent. I made sure I fixed it so the tooth slid like normal, then I put in back together and lithium greased it to hell, works better than new. Wow. I thought I was screwed, but hey just another delima solved with the FD. I love fixing ****. Thanx for all the great advice guys. for anyone else with lock probs, take it apart and inspect it and lithium that bitch up and I bet you fix any problem your having. Thanx

BTW someone want to give me a heads up on what to do to get an LED in the light. Is there one I can purchase that just plug and plays or do I have to change the wiring? Thanx

Radio Shack is your friend in this! I bought several different ones, including amber, red, and clear and went with the amber. Just get a 12v one as they have lots of different voltage LEDs and grain-of-wheat light bulbs. Just solder it in, it is easy. Or use some 20 gauge wire connectors.
