Door Cups, Holes supposed to be there? Pics
Just got new door cups from Ray -- both of my originals have oval holes on the inner sides. New ones are solid -- just curious if there was a reason for the holes or did they get modded along the way.

Thanks for any info.

The '93s had a coated metal pad there that connected with a copper ground strap to the door. It was an anti-static measure, you would touch that before getting out of the car and not get shocked as it would ground you.
While a neat idea, they ALL break over time, it's only sonic welded to the back side of the cup. They're also about impossible to remove without breaking as well.
'94s and up eliminated that. While it is kind of a neat feature, it's just too damn flimsy and Mazda quickly abandoned the idea.

What was the cost of the replacement cup for the drivers side?

The three snap-on pieces were only $0.86 each -- a worthwhile change, definitely grabs tighter.

Screw cover caps that go into the door cups were $4.02 each.
All prices from Ray this past week.

Poorly designed, like a lot of the interior of the FD.
I wanted to keep the ground pad. Grabbing the door and having your fingers falling into a sharp hole you can't see is not a pleasant sensation for the driver or your drunk female passenger(s). Also simply sliding your shoes across the carpet can attract enough electrons to give you a shock when you touch the door as you're getting out of the car.
So as part of my interior refresh, today I used super glue gel to reattach the ground pads to the door cup. In place of the thin copper strip connected each pad, I inserted 10" of 16-gauge ground wire each grounded to a 10mm bolt on the door. The 10" length allows easy removal of the door panel without any drama.
