Unhappy Don't remove MAZDA letters from calipers!!!

My machinist just called me and told me that when he tried to shave the letters off, it exposed a hole 1/4"~ diameter.

I had a few people ask me about it and forgot their names, so I'm broadcasting this to ya'll.

Ouch. Similar happened to a friend trying to machine the Honda off his valve cover to polish...

That makes me wonder how much he tried to shave off. Just taking the letters off down to the raised "ridge" does not compromise the caliper. I did mine back in '97.

Good to be aware of, but I'm too lazy to take grind them off, so I probably won't be experiencing this problem.

Re: Re: Don't remove MAZDA letters from calipers!!!

I've seen several sets of FD calipers with the logos ground off. Nothing to fear.

If you know anything about casting you'd know right away that the interior of the caliper is cast such that the wall thickness is constant and then the material for the logo is essentially added on to the outside. The wall thickness where the logo appears is thus the same thickness as the rest of the caliper + whatever height you wish the logo to rise above the surface.

Picture the casting molds for the caliper being complete and then merely adding additional material on the outside for the Mazda logo. No way in hell that the core of the casting is inset within the backside of the logo.

That machinst probably tried to machine the entire face of the caliper rather than just grind the logo off.

WOW
I didnt think anyone else ever thought of that

I was going to do it for about a year now. I had RX-7 chrome metal stickers made to go on my calipers after I ground off the mazda. I decided I want the mazda on though

if anyone wants the stickers Ill sell em for 20 bucks a pair and I have 2 pairs.

fd3boost your avatar makes me happy

I have red calipers with white lettering. I like having lettering or logos on calipers, makes them look like some expensive aftermarket race equipment IMO. But it doesn't seem that hard to shave the letters off without grinding big holes in it. So what are you gonna do? Buy some new or used OEM replacements or something?

Ok can you put stickers on a caliper? I thought you had to use special paint to hold up to the heat and yet stickers will hold up??

Oh and about the calipers I think hes just tryin to scam you I would ask to see the them with the hole in them. Sounds like bs to me.

I remember back when i was actively driving my 240sx, and people would kill to have calipers that said "Nissan" on them.

I'm going back to the FD, where I belong

Jimlab, I had him take out the ridge too, for that "flushed" look.

My intention was to polish it to a mirror finish so that if someone wants to jump me from behind i can use the mirror finish on the calipers instead of my Spidey senses

Don't worry...

...go ahead and use the caliper. It'll be fine. If you're worried, just plug the hole with some...bathroom caulking...or maybe...some of that new clear duct tape.
