is is true that the fd3s motors need to be "rebuilt" to some extent after the 1st 100k miles?
and what are the different engine codes ( if any for the 3rd gen) and what are the advantages/disadvantages for each?

to some extent yes. the percentage of OEM motors on the fd did not and do not last very long for various reasons. partially due to owner maintenance partially due to inherent shortcomings to various systems most notably the cooling system.
as far as engine codes, there aren't any. all the us engines are the same.
check out the newbie stickies as there is lots of good info in them.

Rotary motors go at all diffrent milages depending on how they are treated and driven.
They usually go for these two reasons:
1. Apex seal get blown (the metal strip attached to each corner of the rotor)
2. Coolant Seal Blows
12a or 12b - 1st gen rx-7s
13B-2nd generation rx-7s N/A
13B Turbo- 2nd gen turbo models
13b-REW - 3rd Gen Twin Turbo
and
