Did you or did you not have the radiator fixed and coolant refilled?

well, it could be heaps of stuff, radiator, coolant line, coolant seals. if you cant diagnose it or fix it just get it towed.

Did you actually try to start the car AFTER the coolant had leaked, but BEFORE you put in the new radiator?

Bottom line: if you've been trying to start the car when it's missing coolant, you're asking for trouble. Get the new radiator installed and refill the coolant system before turning the key again. Then worry about the engine.

does it turn over and not start up or nothing happens?

this may sound dumb but i had trouble starting my car after the dealer worked on it for a while. while i was having someone tow it to my house i popped the clutch with the car off so i wouldnt hit my friend who was driving like an ***, and lt rev'd up a little. when i got home it started right up, but was spewing black carbon gunk form the exhaust. now whenever i cant get it started i do that and it starts right up.

my question to the gurus is... is it bad to do this?

did your car make a sound when you tryed to start it?
get a d.v.o.m (volt meter) or know some one who has one and test the battery first

My mazda service , when they installed new oil pan, and were still waiting for new radiator (old one was broken), ran the engine for 30-60sec to see if the oil pan is leaking somewhere, and there was no coolant in the system. They said it cannot do any harm
Needless to say I was pissed as hell.

But now, 5k miles later everything is still ok with the engine.

In theory that's perfectly fine, but how do you know if 30s or 60s or 90s is the safe limit?

This poster doesn't give me the impression he really even has a full understanding of the coolant system and where it goes.

coolant issues aside, it sounds like your car is flooded. i assume when you tried to start it, it would crank but not catch?

do a forum search for how to start flooded 3rd gens.

ok to check the coolant do a coolant pressure test see if it holds the pressure, if its not and you dont see any leaks outside the motor then its the coolant seals

Check to see if you have spark and If you do your motor maybe be flooded take out the spark plugs and put new one in there and mean while the plugs are out crank the car over with open throttle with the egi fuse out then spray some ATF inside the spark plug holes your car should crank right over. while your doing the cranking "without" the bottom plugs in and "with" the upper ones in you can hear if the car have compression. If it goes PSH PSH PSH PSH PSH PSH PSH on a constent repeat the the motor is good enought to start, but if you have gaps between PSH then you either have a bad seal or stuck seal spring do to you having the car sitting so long.

then if you car still dont start see if you have fuel pressure.
