Does oil control ring have some anti-ficitional coating on it?

this question suddenly pops up, so im just kinda curious,

all of them has some sort of coating on it, u know, new ring has a layer of paint or coating on that's dark gray, are they what i'm thinking? or it's just something to prevent rust ?

I just dig some of the old rings I had out, some of them still has it on after 1234908123098 miles on them. so I took my scrotch brite pad out and yep I can scrape those "coating like thing" off.

I think it may be more anti-corrosive than anything else. Would make sense to be a low-friction coating since it is riding on the iron, but it couldn't be too porous or otherwise it couldn't scrape the oil film back and you'd have a smoky motor.

I dont know, cuz no one seems to talk about it, not even in the FSM, in FSM it just tells u to measure the width of it to make sure its not worn out

speaking of anti-frictional coating, I know the rotor itself has a thin layer near the edge of the side seals, if those are gone, would it really matter? just wondering.

Molybdenum is what I would expect, given the materials.

i don't know what the coating is, but the only part of the oil seal that contacts the side housing is the shiny part, which is why you are measuring the width of that for wear.

its also why old seals still have the coating, because the coating doesn't touch anything except rotor

they appear to have been nitride treated along with the irons to reduce wear.

it's less of a coating and more of a treatment process since it is difficult to remove if you were trying.

I took my blue scrotch brite pads and scrape it all off ... it wasn't that difficult haha

Yes, the rings are incapable of lying and only ever tell the truth.

nitride has a matte finish once the process is done, although the finish can be removed the surface underneath is still treated and hardened.
