Does anyone know what the purpose of the plastic pieces do in front of the rear wheel

Its hard to describe and i dont have a pic but it is in front of the rear tire and every FD came with them. I was just wondering the purpose of it. Is it supposed to protect the body from rocks and or corrosion?

I believe they are just meant to smooth the airflow around the rear wheels.
