Like on the series 4 and 5. I have an idea to do a topmount IC setup and was wondering if it had been done. I've searched with no luck

It would be the most stupid thing you could do, unless you where doing this to make a place to cook bacon while you are driving, if your doing for that reason then its awesome. Make sure you make a tray under the intercooler to catch the bacon grease, no one wants to clean that off the engine
Its the king of meats, forget steak, unless the steak is wrapped in bacon, a top mount IC would be awesome for RX-7 meets, you could use it a a grill to make the bacon wrapped hamburgers and hot dogs.
Actually, SR motorsports had one BITD.
I don't think it sold well, as it's not a good config with everything else that's under there... they're typically used w/ a hood vent/scoop.

There is a reason why every car that comes stock with a top mount replaces and relocates them. Even with a hood scoop, the air does not have a good path to follow as the back side of the intercooler leads right to the top of the block, ie BLOCKED!
I have sth similar to the SR mentioned above by johnchabin.
The car will hopefully be tuned next month; and then I can inform you about the numbers I had, in case they help you decide what to do.
Intake/Outtake modifications for the air in the engine bay are definitely needed.
