Yes, but you might need to get an FD endhousing or something to mate up to the PPF. I know KD sells FD trannys done with T2 internal parts.

what seems to be the real benefit?

i have already replaced 2nd and 5th gear syncros in T2 trannies for the same reason they fail in the FD trannies.

I think the biggest difference is the FD has double-cone synchros for 2nd and 3rd, while the T2 has single cone synchros all around.

I suppose the biggest reason is the T2 is mechanically similar.

I suspect the bellhousings don't need to swap since the rear housing is the same on a T2 and FD. (Or maybe not - I'm not an engine rebuilder)

I belive you need to address the push verses pull style clutch! Plus mabye the starter location depth etc. I would guess at the least the bell houseing would have to be replaced.

did you read the replies to your initial post or not?

I recommend you install an FD tranny into an FD. Makes a lot of sense.

The guts of the trannies are basically the same, but you're looking at doing some component swapping and pioneering to make it work, and there's a lot you could screw up.

I wouldn't bother. Sell the TII tranny to finance an FD tranny. You can get good used FD trannies for a pretty reasonable price.

Well, as long as someone started this thread . . .

If you have an FD tranny to scavange from, you should be able to see fairly quickly. At a minimum, you will need to swap the bell housing and the end housing. The bell housing is needed for the pull-type clutch on the FD (vs. push-type on FC). The rear housing will need to be swapped for the PPF. The interesting question is how the FD shifter and bushings will line-up with the internal rods on the T2? They would not necessarily be any different.

the main section of both trannies looks identical from my perspective, i rebuilt both an FD and an FC tranny in the following week and the main body looked almost identical but i didn't have them both apart at the same time to notice any of the differences. the shifter forks are all located in the same spot and the output shaft looked identical from memory.

I know Dave at KD has been doing this for some years. I don't know the specifics why, but surely there is a reason. My impression, like Karack suggested, is that they do pretty much bolt together. Perhaps a different bearing or two are required, but that's just off-the-shelf stuff.
