Do the cooling fans run independently?
Just noticed that the passenger side fan is running -- But the driver's side is not? Had the engine off, but turned the key on with the a/c on to check the fans.
Should they both be on? I would think so, but I know there are stages and speeds.
If it should be on, what possible troubleshooting can I do? are they on different fuses or any other differences?
Thanks for any help.

Actually i have noticed something similar and tried to figure out what happened without success. There is a before and after situation:
Before: my R12 A/C system was empty (no gas in it)
Before effect: having the a/c button pressed will cause both fans to run (as explained in Dale's great thread, which is my source of knowledge) at speed 1; they normally engaged speed 2 if another input was there from pfc or thermoswitch, etc.
After: freshly recharged R12 A/C system (finally after 2 years)
After effect: having the a/c button pressed will not cause fans to run; if the a/c compressor clucth is engaged the passenger fan will start to run; other inputs will trigger both fans to run
In the beginning i thought that one motor was blown but after testing i've seen that the motor is working so now i'm a bit confused about this...as a side note, i sometime get idle surging from 1k to 1,5k and hunting (apparently at random, seems most likely when the temp reaches the one set on the pfc to trigger fans) when the a/c is on. this disappears by releasing the a/c and turning it on again.
Any ideas from the gurus will be highly appreciated!
hope i will be f help to figure out something new...

Since the Driver's side fan is behind and below everything, is there an easy way to hook power to it for a test? I can just barely see it through the side of the battery and IC.
Thanks
Thanks

Is there a How To on removing the Driver's side fan? I've read all the Fan threads but didn't see any mention of just how to remove/replace.
Ray has new motors in stock, so I'm trying to see if I can do it myself.
Thanks for any help.

Have you tested to make sure the motor is dead? It could be an issue with the wiring and not the motor. I will say that it's more than likely the fan motor (they don't live forever), but I would verify that before ordering a replacement. If you do determine that the motor is dead, I would replace both as the other one is probably not too far behind.
1) tear out everything that is above the rad/fans
2) loosen 2 or 4 bolts (I forget) that hold the fan shroud to the radiator
3) This part is harder than it sounds. Wiggle the fan assembly and angle it in various ways to get it to clear the upper radiator hose on the left and A/C lines on the right. IF all else fails you will need to take the upper rad hose off, or just pull the whole rad/fan combo as a unit.
4) Then it's simple, just a nut that holds the blade on, and then 3 that holds the motor on.
5) Also if your wires are melted on top of the motor, you may have bigger issues such as shorts across the fan relay harness that caused the motor to short and die. happened to me =).
Thanks.
To test the motor, I'm guessing there's a connector that I can remove to expose the leads where I can apply the 12v. I should know, but I haven't taken anything out of the way yet?

Fan motor is on the way from Ray.
Still haven't found a good how-to on unhooking the shroud from the radiator?
I know people have said 2-4 bolts, but still unsure.
Thanks for any insight.

Once you remove everything in the way, it will be pretty evident how the shroud is attached to the radiator. The fasteners are not hidden or hard to see once the intake box, intercooler, battery and tray are removed.
Did you ever figure out how to test the fan?
Did you ever figure out how to test the fan?
it is very common for the OEM battery tray to be put back improperly or just start to sag which will cause the driver side fan motor to burn out from the weight.
I know this is a few months old but if you have not done battery relocation you might consider doing so.
